JD Cymru South round-up: Cambrian United stage late comeback to beat title rivals

JD Cymru South leaders Cambrian United staged a late comeback to earn a 3-2 victory over promotion rivals Caerau Ely at Cwrt yr Ala Road on Friday night.

Hywel Davies gave the hosts the lead in the 19th minute as he played a neat one-two with strike partner Izaac Follon before firing across goal and into the net. That remained the difference between the two sides for over 50 minutes, until Liam Eason converted from the penalty spot to draw Cambrian level.

Jack Ashford fired in the rebound after Zack Maher’s effort was saved to put the Young Guns back ahead soon after, but Cambrian turned the game on its head in dramatic style in the final five minutes.

Jarrad Wright headed home from Cam Strinati’s corner to equalise, before Danny Birch picked out the top corner with a thunderous strike from the edge of the area.

Danny Birch’s 87th-minute winner completed a late turnaround for Cambrian United

Second-place Trefelin remain four points behind the league leaders after Andy Hill’s side scored two late goals to triumph 2-0 over Aberystwyth Town at Park Avenue on Saturday.

Aber were reduced to 10 men just after the hour mark when Ethan O’Toole received two yellow cards in as many minutes.

Despite strong defending from the Seasiders, Trefelin eventually made their man advantage count when Lewys Ware headed home from Jordan Davies’ corner in the 89th minute before substitute Jasper Jones tucked away the rebound from Tyler Brock’s saved effort deep into stoppage time.

Ammanford climbed up to third in the table as Dan John’s hat-trick inspired a 6-0 victory at home over Afan Lido on Friday.

Babucar Sauane got things rolling inside just nine minutes as he headed home at the back post against his former club. John netted his first of the evening in the 36th minute before he rounded Ben Haines and tapped home to make it 3-0 moments into the second half.

Adam John got in on the act in the 70th minute, before Dan John completed his hat-trick soon after. A brilliant solo effort from substitute Gavin Jones wrapped up an impressive display from Wyn Thomas’ side, who remain unbeaten at home in the league this season.

Cardiff Draconians came back from two goals down to secure a thrilling 4-3 win over Treowen Stars at Lydstep Park on Saturday.

The Stars were two goals up after just 13 minutes thanks to goals from Lewis Green and Corey Jenkins, but the Dracs pulled one back through Marinho Manga.

Dan Bowen and Luke Bridgeman bagged quickfire goals to put the hosts ahead for the first time in the match on the hour mark, before Jenkins set up Green to equalise for the Stars. However, the scoreline was level for just five minutes as Harry Treharne restored the home side’s advantage, with his strike proving to be the decisive goal in the capital.

Pontypridd United earned their biggest win since 2021 with an emphatic 7-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Cwmbran Celtic at USW Sports Park on Friday night.

Sam Johnson, Ethan Edwards and Tom Hillman all scored within a dream five-minute period to put the Dragons in firm control at the break. Liam Angel bagged his first league goal for the club early in the second half before he set up Taylor Marsh for Ponty’s fifth goal on 73 minutes.

Hillman then set up both Johnson and Tom Gameson late on as the Dragons climbed up to 12th in the table and moved eight points clear of Celtic, who remain without a win to their name this season.

Llantwit Major made it five league games unbeaten after scoring two late goals to salvage a 2-2 draw at home against Newport City on Saturday.

Rhys Kavanagh bagged a first half brace to put the Steelmen in control at the break, but the key turning point came in the 74th minute when Newport midfielder Danny Hillman was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Major took full advantage of having an extra man as Kofi Rowe and substitute Josh Jones scored quickfire goals in the final 10 minutes to earn their side a point.

Baglan Dragons earned back-to-back wins for the first time this season with 2-1 victory at home against Ynyshir Albions on Friday.

The Dragons were two goals ahead at the break as in-form Nathan Logan sent a clinical first-time effort into the bottom corner before Dylan Thomas fired beyond Harry Webber with a dipping strike from distance.

Joseff Haig pulled a goal back for the Buns early in the second half, but the visitors’ hopes of finding an equaliser were dashed when Christen Bethell was shown a straight red card on 73 minutes. Ynyshir boss Craig Hopkins and Dragons striker Tom Randall were also sent off in a tense finish to the game.

Nothing could separate Carmarthen Town and Trethomas Bluebirds in a 1-1 draw at the LHP Stadium on Saturday.

Jay Thomas had the chance to put the Bluebirds ahead from the penalty spot shortly before half-time, but he saw his penalty saved by Lee Idzi in what was the goalkeeper’s 500th career appearance.

The visitors did find a way past the shot-stopper though, as Jonathan Hood netted his first goal of the season in the 82nd minute. However, Noah Osborne popped up with an instant equaliser – his first goal since March 2024 – as Carmarthen made it a whole calendar year unbeaten at home in the league.
