JD Cymru South round-up | Llanelli Town hit seven to close in on top spot

JD Cymru South leaders Trethomas Bluebirds lost at home for only the second time this season as Baglan Dragons triumphed 1-0 in Ystrad Mynach on Friday night.

The Bluebirds went into the game on a four-match winning run, but were beaten by Artiom Legavec’s 67th-minute goal – his first for Baglan Dragons. The visitors had Tom Randall sent off for a second yellow card moments later, but they held on for all three points. It was the first time the Bluebirds had failed to score at home in a competitive league fixture since May 2023.

Dropped points for the Bluebirds meant that Llanelli Town moved to within a point of top spot with an emphatic 7-1 victory over Goytre United at Stebonheath on Friday.

The Reds were 3-0 up after 35 minutes as Bradley Gibbings opened the scoring early on before Ethan Cann bagged a brace. Brad Flay pulled a goal back for Goytre just before half-time, but Henry Jones restored Llanelli’s three-goal cushion moments after the restart.

Sean Cronin headed home from Jones’ corner to make it five on the hour mark, while the pick of the goals saw Jones complete his brace four minutes later with a fierce effort from distance that went in off the crossbar.

The win was wrapped up with five minutes remaining as substitute Danny Williams scored from the edge of the area for his sixth league goal of the season.

Pontypridd United missed the chance to go level on points with Trethomas Bluebirds as they conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 1-1 with Llantwit Major on Saturday afternoon.

Liam Eason’s 13th league goal of the season, which arrived in the 70th minute, looked to have been enough for Ponty to secure victory in Andy Whittington’s first match in charge, but Major midfielder Ioan Emanuel sent a terrific free-kick beyond Cameron Clarke in the 91st minute to salvage a point.

Major are now unbeaten in their last eight JD Cymru South matches on home turf, while Ponty stretched their unbeaten run in the league to seven matches – the longest current run from any team in the division.

Ammanford moved five points clear of the relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Trefelin on Friday night.

The decisive moment arrived five minutes into the second half courtesy of Lewis Reed, who beautifully chipped the ball over Trefelin goalkeeper Aaron Jones from distance for his 10th league goal of the season. Ammanford are now unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions against Tref.

Taffs Well maintained their unbeaten start under new manager Josh Anderson with a 2-2 draw away at Newport City on Friday night.

Drew Banner put the Wellmen ahead with 27 minutes on the clock, but the two sides would go into half-time level as Marcus Jones equalised six minutes before the break.

Steelmen substitute Jordan Cotterill made an instant impact off the bench as he made it 2-1 just after the hour mark, but the hosts’ lead only lasted three minutes as Sam Johnson netted his fifth goal in as many games to earn a point for Taffs Well.

The result leaves Newport City without a win in their last five matches, the Wellmen remain in the relegation zone, one point adrift from safety.

Caerau Ely made it four league wins in a row with a comfortable 3-0 home victory against Afan Lido on Friday night.

After a goalless first half, Charlie Lewis gave the Young Guns the lead by clinically finishing into the bottom corner eight minutes after the restart.

That remained the difference between the two sides until the 80th minute when Hywel Davies headed home at the back post to double the advantage, before Tom McLean clinched the win with a stunning strike from the edge of the area. Caerau Ely are now up to sixth in the table, while Lido remain rooted at the bottom.
