JD Cymru South round-up | Penrhiwceiber Rangers come from behind to claim first win

Penrhiwceiber Rangers picked up their win in the JD Cymru South with a thrilling 3-2 victory at home to Afan Lido on Saturday afternoon.

It was a lively start at Glasbrook Field as Ioan Evans put Lido in front after just three minutes, only for Owyn Airey to equalise for Rangers three minutes later.

The home side then edged ahead through Joe Jenkins’ header on 22 minutes, but Lido were back on level terms in the 35th minute as Evans turned provider for Josh Webber, who clinically found the back of the net.

Penrhiwceiber’s winning goal arrived nine minutes into the second half as Dewi Matthews produced a spectacular curling effort into the top corner. Dean Brown’s side remain bottom of the table but are now only two points adrift of safety.

League leaders Trethomas Bluebirds ended a three-match winless run with a 3-2 victory away to Pontypridd United on Saturday.

Ethan Edwards found the breakthrough for the Bluebirds after just two minutes as he raced into the area and calmly finished into the bottom corner, while their lead was doubled in the 27th minute as summer signing David Vincent netted his first goal for the club by meeting Lee Baldock’s cross with a powerful header.

Things got even better for the visitors four minutes into the second half when Callum Huggins added a third with a superb finish from the edge of the area.

Luke Cummings pulled a goal back for Ponty in the 80th minute before Dan Griffiths netted from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but it came too late for the hosts to get anything from the game. Trethomas are now three points clear at the top of the table.

Llantwit Major climbed up to third in the table as Tom Tweedy’s goal earned a 1-0 home win against 10-man Ammanford on Saturday.

It was an eventful first half at the Windmill Ground as Ammanford goalkeeper Josh Hutchings received a straight red card in the 32nd minute for a foul in the box, but substitute shot-stopper Luke Martin became an instant hero as he saved the resulting penalty from Ioan Emanuel.

However, Major eventually took the lead on the stroke of half-time as Tweedy slotted home for his second goal of the season. Ben Stait’s side are now unbeaten in their last four league matches.

Two penalties from Tom Meechan were enough to give Cwmbran Celtic a 2-1 home win over 10-man Goytre United on Saturday.

Meechan scored from 12 yards in the 53rd minute and 68th minute, with Goytre captain Dan Paul receiving a second yellow card for his foul which resulted in the second spot kick.

Goytre forward Keane Watts continued his fine goalscoring form as he fired home from Jordan Edwards’ header back across goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time, but it was only a consolation as Celtic returned to winning ways.

Carmarthen Town moved up to fourth place as Rio Booth’s strike secured a 1-0 win over Newport City at the LHP Stadium on Saturday.

The goal came in the 51st minute as Old Gold captain Noah Daley had his initial effort saved by Cohen Riella, but teenage forward Booth was on hand to tuck away the rebound and give Carmarthen their third straight home victory.

Weekend results in full:

Carmarthen Town 1-0 Newport City
Cwmbran Celtic 2-1 Goytre United
Llantwit Major 1-0 Ammanford
Penrhiwceiber Rangers 3-2 Afan Lido
