JD Cymru South round-up | Taffs Well earn crucial win in relegation battle

Taffs Well earned a potentially priceless three points in the relegation battle as they triumphed 4-1 over Afan Lido at Rhiw Dda’r on Saturday.

Goals from Sam Johnson and Vaughn Fowler in the final five minutes of the first half saw the Wellmen lead at the break, before Harry Treharne increased the advantage in the 55th minute.

Lido responded within two minutes as Ben Keen headed home, but Taffs Well provided a swift response of their own through Ellis Sage, who capitalised on a defensive mistake to bag his fifth goal of the season.

The Wellmen are now three points clear of the relegation zone, but 14th-place Pontardawe Town, who have two games in hand, earned another hard-fought point in their bid for survival after they drew 1-1 with fourth-placed Carmarthen Town at Parc Ynysderw.

Ponty got off to the worst start possible as Gavin Jones gave Carmarthen the lead inside just two minutes, but Joe Lloyd produced a moment of magic midway through the first half to level the scoreline

Both sides could not be separated despite a tense second half, which saw Carmarthen boss Mark Aizlewood sent off in stoppage time.

With the teams around them avoiding defeat, it was a frustrating weekend for Llantwit Major who suffered a late 1-0 home defeat to Goytre United.

With the game seemingly heading for a goalless draw, the visitors were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time and Keane Watts duly converted.

The Major are now just two points above the drop and head to Goytre United next weekend seeking immediate revenge.
