JD Cymru South round-up | Tight at the top after Trethomas Bluebirds slip up

Trethomas Bluebirds suffered their first league defeat of the season as Llanelli Town earned a 4-1 win in Ystrad Mynach on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds made a fast start as Danny Williams and Henry Jones gave them a two-goal advantage after just 19 minutes, but Leon Thomas halved the deficit for the Bluebirds before half-time.

Ethan Cann scored for the third consecutive league game to restore Llanelli’s two-goal advantage with 53 minutes on the clock, while Trethomas were reduced to 10 men two minutes later as Andy Evans was shown a straight red card.

Llanelli wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time thanks to substitute Lewis Iles, with Lee John’s side now standing as the only unbeaten team left in the JD Cymru South this season.

Trethomas remain top of the table, but now only on goal difference as Cambrian United drew level on points with them courtesy of a 3-0 home win over Taffs Well.

Cameron Keetch marked his return to the club with a superb strike in the 34th minute to open the scoring, while Josh Allen doubled the advantage seven minutes later with his first goal since the opening weekend.

Keetch grabbed his second of the game just before the hour mark, wrapping up a return to winning ways for Cambrian after two consecutive defeats in league and cup.

Third-place Newport City are also level on points with the top two after they earned an impressive 1-0 home win over fellow high-flyers Trefelin.

Substitute Jordan Cotterill was the hero for the Steelmen as he came off the bench in the 72nd minute and scored the winner just a minute later, tapping home from Calum Bateman’s square pass.

Baglan Dragons staged a superb second half comeback to defeat Cwmbran Celtic 4-3 and end a five-match winless run.

Tom Davies opened the scoring for the Dragons after just 11 minutes, but goals from Kian Bodenham, Alex Bonthron and Jordan Clarke had turned the game around for Celtic by the 47th minute.

Undeterred, Baglan got back in the game eight minutes later through Davies’ second goal of the afternoon before captain Lewis Holmes headed home from Dylan Thomas’ corner to equalise on the hour mark.

The winning goal came in the 72nd minute courtesy of substitute Jordan Evans, who danced his way through the Celtic defence and calmly slotted past Iwan Hooper.

Ammanford claimed their first home league of the season as Lewis Reed’s double inspired them to a 4-1 victory over Penrhiwceiber Rangers.

A clever pass from Callum Thomas allowed Reed to open the scoring with a deft finish beyond Jacob Ireland early on, but the home side were pegged back 12 minutes later as Brandon Davies netted from close range.

The first 10 minutes of the second half would prove crucial, as Adam Morgan and Callum Thomas both found the net to give Ammanford a cushion. Reed then grabbed his second goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute.

Wyn Thomas’ side could have made it five in stoppage time but substitute Hannibal Sallami missed from the penalty spot.

Keane Watts continued his impressive start to the season as his brace helped secure a 3-1 comeback victory for Goytre United at home against Carmarthen Town.

Carmarthen found an early breakthrough thanks to captain Noah Daley, but Watts soon levelled the scoreline when he finished smartly from Kyran Steadman’s diagonal ball. Watts scored again to give Goyt a half-time lead as he produced another clinical finish into the bottom corner from Brad Flay’s pass.

The home side eventually found daylight on 76 minutes as substitute Kyle Williams lobbed Carmarthen goalkeeper Lee Idzi from the edge of the area.

Josh Webber’s brace for Afan Lido was not enough for all three points as Caerau Ely salvaged a 2-2 draw at Princess Margaret Way.

Brandon Griffiths put Caerau Ely ahead inside just 15 minutes, but Webber’s double gave Lido the advantage with just half an hour left to play.

However, the hosts were pegged back late on as a terrific curling strike from Liam Bishop earned the Young Guns a hard-fought point on the road.

Matty Kimmins’ late strike saw Llantwit Major come back to earn a 1-1 draw away to Pontypridd United.

A well-worked free-kick was finished off by Dan Griffiths as Pontypridd took the lead three minutes into the second half, but Kimmins equalised 10 minutes before the final whistle with his fourth goal of the campaign.

Ponty finished the game with 10 men as substitute Tom Stokes was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
