JD Cymru South round-up: Trefelin close the gap at the top as Cambrian United draw

JD Cymru South leaders Cambrian United were held to a 1-1 draw by third-place Ammanford at the M&P Group 3G on Friday night.

After a goalless first half, Ammanford went ahead on 55 minutes through Callum Thomas’ first goal of the season but Jay Woodword salvaged a point for Cambrian with 12 minutes left on the clock as he flicked the ball over Luke Martin.

Second-place Trefelin are now just two points behind top spot, with a game in hand, following their 2-0 home win over fourth-place Carmarthen Town at Ynys Park on Friday.

Tyler Brock bagged his sixth goal of the campaign to put Trefelin ahead in the 31st minute, before Roan Piper doubled the advantage early in the second half.

Andy Hill’s side have now kept seven consecutive clean sheets in the league and are unbeaten in their last 11 matches in all competitions.

Jack Jones scored a stoppage-time equaliser to earn Pontypridd United a 2-2 draw against Afan Lido at the Marston’s Stadium on Saturday.

Ponty were denied by a goal-line clearance early on, but Ethan Edwards did find an opener for the visitors soon after with his drilled finish into the bottom corner in the 12th minute.

Lido drew level just before half-time as Liam McCreesh curled a sweetly struck free-kick into the top corner, before the 40-year-old completed the turnaround early in the second half with his looping effort over Cameron Clarke.

Ponty were awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute but Sam Johnson blazed over the bar from 12 yards. That looked to have cost the visitors until Jones popped up in the 95th minute to salvage a point for Mark Dunford’s men.

Treowen Stars claimed their first home league win of the campaign as Tom Meechan’s brace inspired a 3-0 victory over Ynyshir Albions on Saturday.

Stars captain Christian Davies scored his first goal since August to break the deadlock in the 25th minute before Meechan netted a quickfire double in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

A goalless second half meant that Ben Murphy’s side kept their first clean sheet in over three months, with victory seeing them climb up to 11th in the table. Ynyshir remain just three points above the relegation zone.
