Although in the twilight years of his career, Lee Trundle still has a thirst for silverware and wants to fire Trefelin to success in this weekend’s Welsh Blood Service League Cup national final against Airbus UK Broughton (KO 17:15).
Trefelin wind up their campaign on Saturday at Park Avenue following yet another encouraging season in which evergreen Trundle has helped inspire the side to their highest-ever league finish.
The Ynys Park-based outfit impressively finished fourth in this season’s JD Cymru South and Trundle hopes the club cap the season off in style.
Welsh Blood Service League Cup final
“I think it’s been a good season for us,” said Trundle, who has remained a mainstay in the Trefelin line-up despite turning 48 earlier this season.
“It’s the highest the club has finished in its history, along with a regional cup final win and we’re now hoping to go for a national final win.
“It’s been great for the football club because everyone involved, from the lads behind the scenes and the people who run the club, deserve this success.”
Just as Trefelin have continued to thrive this season, so too has Trundle’s tendency to produce exquisite goals. He was once again doing the rounds on social media with a staggering finish that put Penrhiwceiber Rangers to the sword in last weekend’s 3-1 Southern final victory.
In a mesmerising finish that was truly fit for any level, Trundle chested down a diagonal ball before emphatically unleashing a pinpoint finish into the top-corner from a narrow angle on the edge of the 18-yard box.

“Always, all the way through my career, I always think how fast can I get my first shot off? And that was the first chance I got to hit a shot,” he explained.
“Although it was a tight angle, I still back myself in those areas in and around the box, so it was nice to see that one fly into the top-corner.”
Trefelin’s route to the final has been far from straightforward however, with the side required to come from behind in all three rounds prior to the Southern final. Trundle is anticipating another difficult encounter against JD Cymru North counterparts Airbus UK Broughton.

“Coming second in the league and winning their regional final, I think they’re a very good side. They’ve scored a lot of goals, they only lost out to Colwyn Bay, who’re a very strong side this season, so we’re expecting a good game of football. It’s going to be a good day out for both clubs.”
Meanwhile, beyond this season Trundle has no desire to wind down his playing career and still has ambitions of gracing the JD Cymru South with Trefelin for yet another season.
“I’ve had a great season, I’ve had 21 goals in all competitions. I’ve played under the management staff before and ‘Hillo’ (Andy Hill) is my favourite manager to play under and I have a lot of close friends at the club. So, from a personal view, it’d be a place where I want to stay.”
