The New Saints hopeful of European comeback in Luxembourg

The New Saints remain confident of progressing from the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round, despite defeat to FC Differdange 03 in the first leg last week.

Artur Abreu scored the only goal of the game as the Luxembourg champions triumphed 1-0 at Park Hall, leaving TNS with an uphill task in the away trip on Tuesday (KO 19:00 BST).

If Craig Harrison’s side cannot turn the tie around, they will suffer a disappointing early exit from Europe after making history by reaching the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League last season.

“It would be easy throwing mud at people, screaming and shouting at people, acting crazy, but we need to find a solution,” Harrison said after the first leg defeat.

“The boys are bitterly disappointed but it’s in our own hands. It’s a challenge, but we’ll look at things, make things better. We’ll relish the chance to go out there and try to put things right.”

“Getting beaten at home is tough, but we’ve just got to put it to one side now and perform how we know we can away and get the job done,” defender Harrison McGahey added.

Craig Harrison says TNS will relish the chance to ‘put things right’ in Luxembourg

The Saints have not overturned a first leg defeat to progress in European qualifying for eight years and have only won one of their last 10 away qualifying matches.

After Leo Smith suffered an ACL injury against KF Shkendija three weeks ago, TNS were dealt a further blow in the first leg against Differdange as summer signing Harvey Godsmark-Ford was forced off with a suspected ankle fracture.

It means that Kade Craig is likely to come back in to start, with Harrison likely to contemplate other changes in a bid to turn the tie around.

Last week’s first leg was another frustrating night upfront for record signing Ben Wilson, while substitutes Ken Charles and Aramide Oteh combined for the latter to score – only for the offside flag to be raised – so both will be pushing to start in Luxembourg.
