Welsh Blood Service League Cup | Regional finals preview

Silverware is up for grabs on Saturday evening as the Welsh Blood Service League Cup regional finals take place.

In the Northern section, Mold Alexandra meet Llandudno at Denbigh Town’s Central Park (KO 17:30).

It has been an impressive season for Mold, who are confirmed to finish fourth in the JD Cymru North after winning 18 of their 28 league games so far and a trophy would cap off the campaign in style.

In this competition, Steve Monk’s side triumphed 3-2 over JD Cymru North title challengers Holywell Town in round one before winning 2-1 away at Guilsfield in round two. Danny Warren scored in both of those matches before stealing the show with four goals in a 5-1 victory over Denbigh Town in the regional semi-final.

It was a much tighter affair in the regional semi-final for Llandudno, who needed a penalty shootout to progress past Prestatyn Town. The Seasiders got the better of Chirk AAA and Llanidloes Town in the previous rounds.

Jordan Hadaway’s side secured safety from relegation over the Easter weekend, an impressive achievement after they picked up just three points from their first nine games of the season.

Mold have done the double over Llandudno in league competition this season. Jake Roberts’ strike earned a 1-0 win in October before Joe Ormrod scored a late stoppage time winner in a 2-1 victory in January.

In the Southern section, the JD Cymru South’s top two Briton Ferry Llansawel and Llanelli Town face off at Ammanford’s Recreation Ground (KO 17:30).

It has been an intense race at the top of the league table between the sides this season, with Ferry currently one point clear at the summit with a game in hand after Llanelli slipped up with a 2-1 defeat to Goytre United on Easter Monday.

It means that Andy Dyer’s side will win the title if they defeat Ammanford next week, but a mouth-watering showdown between the two is in store on the final day if they do not.

Ferry are back at the Recreation Ground after winning 4-3 against Ammanford there in the regional semi-finals, having beaten Baglan Dragons and Pontardawe Town in previous rounds. They also reached this stage last season but were defeated by Barry Town United.

Llanelli are the highest scorers in this season’s Welsh Blood Service League Cup, having won 4-0 against Abertillery Bluebirds in round one and 5-1 against Afan Lido in round two before a narrow 2-1 victory over Cambrian & Clydach Vale in the regional semi-final.

Ferry have defeated Llanelli twice already this season, as goals from Joe Jones and Tom Walters secured a 2-0 win on the opening day of the league campaign before Luke Bowen’s strike sealed a 1-0 victory in the JD Welsh Cup Fourth Round.

Tickets for both regional finals will be available to buy on the turnstiles with cash only, costing £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
