Welsh Blood Service League Cup | Second round review

The final eight teams left in the 2023/24 Welsh Blood Service League Cup have been confirmed following the weekend’s second round ties.

Llanelli Town booked their spot in the last eight by earning a convincing win away at Afan Lido for the second week in a row.

Lee John’s side triumphed 5-1 at the Marston’s Stadium on Friday night, with Joe Hopkins, Sean Cronin and Sam Johnson getting on the scoresheet before a late brace from in-form forward Ethan Cann.

Ammanford were also convincing winners on Friday night as they defeated Carmarthen Town 3-0 at The Rec.

Callum Thomas opened the scoring inside the first three minutes before a pair of second half goals from Mark Jones wrapped up the victory.

Cambrian & Clydach Vale left it late to secure a 2-0 win over Caerau Ely at the M&P Group 3G on Friday night.

The deadlock was not broken until the 72nd minute when teenager Jacob Jones found the net, before Dave Thomas’ stoppage-time penalty made sure of the Cam Army’s spot in the next round.

Briton Ferry Llansawel became the final side to progress in the Southern section with a 2-0 win away at Pontardawe Town on Saturday.

Tyler Brock opened the scoring after just six minutes, while Tom Walters scored from the penalty spot shortly before half-time after he was fouled in the box.

In the Northern section, Denbigh emerged victorious in a seven-goal thriller as they defeated Flint Town United 4-3 at the Essity Stadium on Saturday.

Flint led early on through Luis Lacey, but Denbigh turned the game around to lead at half-time thanks to goals from Matthew Worrall and Ryan Kershaw.

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro levelled the contest again just before the hour mark, but Josh Lock and Tom Weir earned the visitors a two-goal cushion soon after. Harvey Drazdauskas’ first senior goal for Flint in stoppage time came too late in the day to save his side.

Prestatyn Town progressed to the third round on penalties following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes against Ruthin Town at Bastion Gardens.

Dan Atkins opened the scoring after just eight minutes, but the Seasiders had Kurtis Pearson and Karl Clair sent off before substitute Andy Brown equalised for Ruthin in the 91st minute.

In the shootout, Owain Morris missed Ruthin’s second spot-kick and Prestatyn scored all of their first four before Ben Jones sent them through by scoring from 12 yards.

Mold Alexandra are into the next round following a 2-1 victory away at Guilsfield on Saturday.

Jake Roberts’ penalty and Danny Warren’s composed finish came within four minutes of each other in the first half to put Mold in control, before Jamie Hyde struck a screamer to halve the deficit for Guilsfield just before half-time.

However, the hosts could not find an equaliser after the break. Roberts was sent off for a second yellow card offence deep into stoppage time.

Llandudno continued their impressive recent form with a 3-1 victory away at Llanidloes Town on Saturday afternoon.

First half goals from Billy Nicholas and Harvey Bennett put the Seasiders in control, before Fabrizio Murtas added a third just after the hour mark. Nyasha Mwamuka’s first goal for Llanidloes proved only to be a consolation.
