Full-time verdict: Jordan Williams was the hero for The New Saints with the winning goal as Craig Harrison’s side complete the domestic treble with a 2-1 win over a spirited and determined Connah’s Quay Nomads who enjoyed long periods of possession. 41. Head to head

There have been just two meetings between The New Saints and Connah’s Quay Nomads this season.

The first match took place at the Essity Stadium in October and it was the Nomads that took the lead through Jack Kenny. However, Craig Harrison turned to his bench to turn the result around as substitutes Declan McManus and Ben Clark scored late in the match as the Saints claimed a 2-1 win.

The return match at Park Hall took place on New Year’s Eve and it was the home side that went ahead through Ryan Brobbel before Noah Edwards levelled for the visitors.

Jordan Williams would ensure that the Saints took maximum points with the winning goal to earn his side another 2-1 victory, while Kenny was sent off for the Nomads.

      42. The remaining treble winners

The last time that The New Saints won the treble in 2016, it was Ryan Brobbel who played a part in securing it with a goal in the JD Welsh Cup final to help defeat Airbus 2-0.

Nine years on, Brobbel is one of only two members of the playing squad that season – along with Adrian Cieslewicz – who remains at Park Hall as they aim to complete another treble in Sunday’s JD Welsh Cup final against Connah’s Quay Nomads.

      43. Jay Catton hopes for repeat success

In what is a repeat of last season’s final, manager Jay Catton has called on his players to emulate last season’s success in the JD Welsh Cup Final by beating The New Saints once again.

“It’s an opportunity for our players to replicate how great that day was. It was a really good final at Newport. It was competitive with chances for both sides, but we fought well, performed really well and on merit we won the Welsh Cup on the day.

“It’s been what you would call a transitional season. A number of really good players have moved on to professional clubs. Losing those players has been difficult in this transitional period, but we still have a really, really good group of players. We’ve made the Welsh Cup Final for the second year on the bounce, and we’re looking forward to an exciting future.”

      44. Craig Harrison aware of Nomads strengths

The New Saints have the opportunity to complete an incredible season with the domestic treble on Sunday when they take on Connah’s Quay Nomads. However, Craig Harrison – The New Saints boss – knows his team’s opponents are dangerous.

“They’ve got good experienced players. I know that they’re very good players, very good professionals. They’re going to be disappointed about where they finished this season as in my opinion, with their squad, they should be finishing around fourth place.

“From the players point of view they’ve got good professionals, really good lads that you would want in the trenches with you when the chips are down, so for them it’s an ideal opportunity if we’re not on it for them to claw their season back by qualifying for Europe and to win another trophy. We need to make sure that we’re on it and there’s no complacency whatsoever.”

      45. Former Saint Chris Marriott eyeing European football

Chris Marriott, now donning the colours of Connah’s Quay Nomads, has appeared in nine of the last 10 finals, winning the Cup on seven occasions with The New Saints.

“It’s been a disappointing season for us in the league. For a club like Connah’s Quay and the players we’ve got, we were hoping to finish a lot higher and that’s been obvious for everyone to see. But the one thing we’re still in is the Welsh Cup final and that gives us a really good chance of achieving European football which is what Connah’s Quay strive for.

“I think the Welsh Cup is a prestigious cup. I always said at TNS, that the Welsh Cup was just as good, if not better than winning the league.”

      49. JD Welsh Cup record

The New Saints have lifted the JD Welsh Cup on nine previous occasions – a record only bettered by Wrexham, Cardiff City and Swansea City. Their first success was under their former name of Llansantffraid in 1995/96 as they defeated Barry Town on penalties after a famous 3-3 draw at the National Stadium in Cardiff.

Their most recent success was in 2022/23 when Bala Town were defeated 6-0, the biggest margin of victory in the final since Wrexham beat Shrewsbury Town 7-0 in 1930/31.

The Nomads won the competition Cup for the first time in 2017/18 as Aberystwyth were defeated 4-1 through goals from Michael Bakare, Andy Owens and a double from Michael Wilde.

The Flintshire side then lifted the trophy for a second time last season as Harry Franklin and Josh Williams scored in a 2-1 win over The New Saints at Rodney Parade. The Nomads also reached the final in 1998 and 2019, but were beaten by Bangor City and The New Saints respectively.
