FULL-TIME VERDICT: Cymru secured an impressive 3–2 victory over EURO quarter-finalists Switzerland in their final match of 2025 at Estadio Chapín.
Goals from Sophie Ingle, Hannah Cain and substitute Lily Woodham earned Cymru their first win since their memorable play-off triumph over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last December.
Head coach Rhian Wilkinson made four changes to the side that drew 1–1 with Korea Republic on Friday. Safia Middleton-Patel, Mia Ross, Ceri Holland and Rachel Rowe all came into the starting XI, while Olivia Clark, Rhiannon Roberts, Mared Griffiths and Woodham dropped to the bench. The match also marked milestone occasions for both Holland and Ffion Morgan, who made their 50th senior international appearances.
Cymru struck first after 16 minutes. Ingle reacted quickest to Holland’s high cross, rising above Elvira Herzog to head home her second goal in as many games. Their advantage was short-lived, however, as Switzerland equalised just three minutes later. Aurélie Csillag burst through the Cymru backline before unleashing a powerful shot beyond Middleton-Patel.
Cymru almost restored their lead soon after. A slick passage of play sent Cain free down the right, and her cut-back found Rowe, whose driven effort just cleared the crossbar.
They did reclaim the lead on 34 minutes. A superb pass from Ingle split the Swiss defence and found Cain’s well-timed run. She produced a clever, lofted finish over the advancing Herzog to put Cymru 2–1 up at the interval.
Cymru started the second half just as brightly and made the perfect restart. Substitute Lily Woodham connected sweetly with Cain’s cross from the right, firing a brilliant first-time strike into the far corner—her first involvement since entering the match.
Wilkinson used the second half to introduce several substitutes, including a senior debut for Lauren Hughes, who replaced Jones in the 51st minute. Switzerland pulled a goal back on 70 minutes after Cymru were caught playing out from the back. Iman Beney applied the punishment, showing excellent footwork to evade Rhiannon Roberts before guiding a low strike into the bottom corner beyond Middleton-Patel.
The Swiss came agonisingly close to an equaliser late on. A looping header across goal found Beney, but she couldn’t direct her close-range effort on target. At the other end, Cymru nearly added a fourth when Griffiths drove forward and curled a strike narrowly over the bar.
In the end, Cymru held firm to secure an impressive victory in Spain, an encouraging way to round off the year.

Switzerland hit back quickly through Aurélie Csillag, who burst through the Cymru backline and fired a powerful effort beyond Middleton-Patel. But Cymru regained the advantage 11 minutes before half-time. Ingle delivered a superb free-kick into the path of Hannah Cain, who chipped the advancing goalkeeper and finished smartly to restore the lead. Cymru have enjoyed long spells of possession and created plenty of opportunities, but this contest is far from settled.

WILKINSON REFLECTS ON KOREA REPUBLIC DRAW
Cymru head coach Rhian Wilkinson spoke to the media on Monday and reflected on the 1-1 draw with Korea Republic as her side prepare to take on Switzerland at the El Chapin Stadium in Jerez on Tuesday (11am)
“It was a really big step forward for us,” said Wilkinson. “This has been a really strong camp where the group has really focused on what we want to achieve.
We knew we were going to have two fantastic tests during this camp, and I was really pleased with the number of chances we created.
“We did a lot of things well, but equally, we know there’s that next step to get to, which is putting chances away. The first step is creating those chances and now we have to make them count.”
Cymru now play their final match of a memorable 2025 that saw the side complete at their first major tournament. “A win would be a lovely way to end the year,” Wilkinson added. “I think we could all say that.
“But equally I don’t think one game summarises the year. I think this has probably been the year of the most growth this team has ever had.
“Whatever the result, I am going to look back at this year always in my career as being really hard and equally probably where I have had the most personal growth, and as a team where we have pushed the most.”

HOLLAND AND MORGAN SET FOR CAP MILESTONE
Cymru duo Ceri Holland (below) and Ffion Morgan both featured in the 1-1 draw with Korea Republic on Friday to put both players on 49 senior international appearances.
The pair can now become the latest players to reach the 50 cap mark against Switzerland on Tuesday when Rhian Wilkinson’s side play their final match of the year.
“It’s a really proud moment for me and my family,” said Holland on Monday. “It’s really nice to have Ffion reaching that milestone alongside me. It was all about that 49th cap against South Korea first, but now I can look ahead to the 50th.
“My journey has been a bit different to a few of the girls who came through the pathway here, but I’ve enjoyed my journey. I wouldn’t change anything. I’ve got a lot of things to improve and work on still, but I’ve got a lot more to give.”
“I think it’s crazy that I’m reaching 50 caps,” added Morgan. “It’s been a fun journey, but it’s mad to think that I’m about to play for Wales for the 50th time.
“It’s an honour and a privilege every time to play for my country, so to reach this milestone is still all a bit surreal. My parents are coming out here too, of course they would be, so it’s a special occasion.”

INGLE ON SWISS TEST
Sophie Ingle scored for Cymru in the 1-1 draw with Korea Republic on Friday (below) and is expecting another tough challenge on Tuesday when her side take on Switzerland in Jerez.
“They’re a very good tactical team, they move the ball really well and create overloads out wide, so we will have to try and manage that,” said Ingle.
“They also have a lot of fast, forward players who like to dribble with the ball, so our backline will have to be front-footed. We need to take our chances and keep working hard.”
Switzerland were also in action on Friday as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Belgium, with Alisha Lehmann scoring their only goal.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS
There have been some significant games between Cymru and Switzerland in a fixture that stretches back 32 years to September 1993 when the two nations met at Cwmbran Stadium.
That match was the first-ever women’s competitive fixture played by Cymru as the visitors claimed a 3-2 win in EURO 1995 qualifying. Switzerland would then claim a 4-2 win in the return match the following April.
The two nations then met for a friendly international in March 2006 with Switzerland again coming out on top in a 3-2 victory, before they were drawn together in qualifying for EURO 2009.
Switzerland did the double over Cymru again, first claiming a 2-0 win at Rhyl in October 2007 before repeating the scoreline the following May. However, Cymru would hold Switzerland to a 0-0 draw a decade later at the Cyprus Cup in March 2018.
The most-recent fixture remains the most memorable as the two nations met in Zurich in October 2022 for the FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off final. Rhiannon Roberts gave Cymru the lead after 19 minutes (below) before Ramona Bachamann levelled for the home side to take the game to extra-time.
With the tie heading to penalties, Switzerland broke Cymru hearts in added time of extra-time as Fabienne Humm scored a late, late winner to hand her side a 2-1 win.
