      1. MATCH SUMMARY

Cymru’s FIFA World Cup qualifying hopes ended in agonising fashion as Bosnia and Herzegovina progressed on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.

In a fiercely competitive play-off semi-final, Cymru produced a disciplined and energetic performance in front of The Red Wall but were ultimately denied by the narrowest of margins.

After a first half of limited chances, Cymru came closest to breaking the deadlock when Harry Wilson struck the crossbar with a curling effort, while the visitors threatened sporadically at the other end.

Cymru made the breakthrough six minutes after the restart through Dan James. Latching onto a loose ball, the winger showed pace and composure to fire home from distance and give the hosts a deserved lead, sparking celebrations around Cardiff City Stadium.

Craig Bellamy’s side looked to build on their advantage, with James twice going close to a second, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow produced a crucial save to deny Ermedin Demirović and preserve the lead.

However, Bosnia and Herzegovina found their moment late in the game. Veteran forward Edin Džeko rose to head home from a corner on 86 minutes, levelling the contest and forcing extra time.

Both sides pushed for a winner across the additional 30 minutes, with Cymru finishing strongly. Harry Wilson went close again, but a decisive goal proved elusive as the tie was settled from the penalty spot.

Cymru made a positive start to the shoot-out, with Harry Wilson converting and Darlow saving from Demirović. However, the momentum shifted as Brennan Johnson fired over and Neco Williams saw his effort saved by Nikola Vasilj.

Bosnia and Herzegovina capitalised, with Kerim Alajbegović scoring the decisive penalty to secure a 4-2 shoot-out victory.

It was a cruel conclusion for Cymru, who delivered a committed performance but were ultimately denied a place in the play-off final on a night of fine margins in the Welsh capital.

With Italy winning their Play-Off Semi-Final 2-0, Cymru will welcome Northern Ireland to Cardiff on Tuesday for an international challenge match.

      2. Craig Bellamy spoke to BBC Match of the Day after the match:

“I am very proud but definitely disappointed. There was a lot of good tonight, but it wasn’t to be. I got what I wanted from my team, definitely. But with 20 minutes left we stopped playing and we just can’t do that, even though it was understandable. It was a big lesson for us. We needed to see the game out with the ball.

“We regained momentum in extra time. Considering the chances we created and moments we had, maybe we’d have liked to have been out of sight by then.”

      3. Bosnia and Herzegovina score their fifth penalty to win the shootout 2-4.
Cymru’s World Cup dream is over.

      18. FULL-TIME VERDICT

Cymru got what they wanted in the second half when Dan James scored from around 25 yards to make it 1-0. Bellamy’s team could have scored more after hitting the woodwork through James but Bosnia and Herzegovina legend Edin Džeko found their equaliser four minutes before full-time. Cymru looked tired before the final whistle was blown and must now navigate 30 minutes of extra-time to stay in the hunt for a place at the World Cup.

      44. SECOND HALF! Bosnia get the match back underway.

      45. HALF-TIME VERDICT

Craig Bellamy appeared to get exactly what he called for from his players as they played with confidence and high intensity. Both teams appeared confident that they could get themselves in front but it was Cymru who created the best chance. After David Brooks worked hard on the edge of the box with four defenders in front of him, he did well to find Harry Wilson, who took aim with a curling left-footed strike from the corner of the area but the talisman was unlucky to see his shot rebound off the woodwork. Bellamy will want more of the same in the second half.

      46. There’s two minutes of added time.

      47. Strong defending from Dasilva sees him block Dedić’s shot on the edge of the box.

      48. After Dan James is fouled on the right, Wilson forces Vasilj to scramble across his goal to dive and push the ball away. That was great vision from Wilson.

      83. Craig Bellamy has spoken to Sgorio ahead of the match: “It’s a complex game, you would expect that in a play-off, and hopefully a very good night. We want to be on the front foot, we want to be aggressive, we want to challenge for second balls and win our duels. We need to be so competitive.”

        Watch more below.

      84. Ethan Ampadu captain’s Cymru tonight in this FIFA World Cup Play-Off Semi-Final.

      85. CYMRU STARTING XI

Craig Bellamy has named two changes to his starting 11 from the 7-1 win over North Macedonia in November as Jordan James and Ethan Ampadu come in for Josh Sheehan and Liam Cullen. Meanwhile, Dylan Lawlor gets the nod in defence.

      86. THE FIRST MATCH

Cymru played their first ever international match 150 years ago on 25 March 1876 against Scotland. The game was played in Glasgow and the Scots won 4-0.

      88. MORNING HEADLINES

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy features on the front page of the Western Mail this morning with his quotes on how his side would be an ‘massive asset’ to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I honestly believe we’ll be a massive asset to this World Cup,” said Bellamy in his press conference yesterday. “Our players will be, our fans will be and our coaching team will be. We’ll add to this.”

Meanwhile, the front page also carries the sad news that former Cymru player and manager John Toshack, who played a key role in the development of the golden generation that included the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen, has been diagnosed with dementia.

The thoughts of everyone at the FAW are with John and his family at this time.

      89. BELLAMY LOOKING FOR CONTROL OVER CHAOS

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon and explained how there will only be one approach from his side against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff tomorrow night.

“There’s only been one team who’s ever had more possession than us,” explained Bellamy. “We’re sixth in Europe for our overall possession stats. So, we’re used to having the ball. And with that comes experience, with that comes know-how.

“Sometimes you have to gain patience, sometimes you have to gain the extra pass to be able to open it up more. If it doesn’t open up first, then try not to get involved in chaos. A chaotic game will not suit us, it suits them.

“So it’s very important that we’re able to move the ball, wait for the openings and then find the openings.”

Bellamy spoke at length and opened up on what he has learnt the most since taking charge back in 2024. “I would say I’ve learned more about me really,” he explained.

“I always believed in what coaches I would have and what value they would bring and the players we had. But I put this off for a long time because my own insecurities.

“I looked at every excuse not to do this type of role. I liked being a coach until I’ve run out of excuses and now I sit after this period saying ‘maybe I can do this’ and I think that’s probably the most important thing I’ve learned.

“I knew I would really enjoy this, but I didn’t realise how much. I’ve loved it and where we are exactly where we need to be. We’re not out of qualification in group stages. We’re a serious, capable nation and we’ve proved that over the last 12 odd years.

“We’ve kept it going and we will keep going some more. Imagine what the next two years are going to look like? You know where the Euros are going to be and the players we have coming through are exciting. But we have two games now to keep this marching forward.

“I honestly feel we should be at this tournament. We’re going to have to work hard to get there, but I believe we’d be a massive asset to the World Cup – our players, our fans and our coaching team. We’d add to it.”

      90. AMPADU TO LEAD CYMRU ON THURSDAY

Ethan Ampadu will lead Cymru into Thursday’s huge 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina having been confirmed as captain.

The 25-year-old will make his 60th senior international appearance on Thursday night after making his debut in 2017. Ampadu has been captain of Leeds United since the summer of 2024, leading them back to the Premier League last season.

      91. KARL DARLOW ON CARDIFF ATMOSPHERE

Cymru goalkeeper Karl Darlow sat down with the media earlier this week and spoke about the difference the atmosphere at the Cardiff City Stadium can make ahead of Thursday’s play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“I think probably the comfort that you get from playing at home, and the confidence that you get from playing in front of your own fans – that’s a massive part of home advantage,” said Darlow.

“Obviously, when the draws came out that both fixtures would be at home, everyone automatically thought, ‘Okay, yeah, we’ve got a really good chance here.’

“I think just that mindset of having the confidence of knowing that you’re playing in front of your own fans, and that these teams are going to have to come here and really fight to keep up with us and play the game.”

      92. PAPER ROUND

Cymru legend Gareth Bale has backed Craig Bellamy’s side to make history and qualify for a second successive FIFA World Cup.

“It’s going to be two tough games but we need to get past Bosnia first,” Bale told The Sun. “The semi is a final, you know if you lose, you’re out. It’s a tough feat.”

Bale played a key role in Rob Page’s side ending a 64-year wait to return to the world stage in 2022 as he scored the decisive goals against Austria and Ukraine in the play-off semi-final and final.

“We’ve been playing good football,” he added. “We have had a good campaign. It was a great result in the last match as well so confidence is high and there’s no reason why not.”

      93. NECO WILLIAMS ON CYMRU TOGETHERNESS

Neco Williams is still just 24 but has made over 50 senior appearances for his country and is now planning for a third major tournament with Cymru.

“As kids, you watched the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Craig Bellamy,” said Williams in an interview with BBC Sport this week. “You grew up idolising them. You wanted to be like them.

“Now it’s the new generation to come in. We’re not a massive country and we don’t have loads and loads of players. But the way we are as a team and the togetherness, I think that’s what drives us and gets us through.”

Williams made his senior debut for Cymru as a teenager in September 2020 and scored the winner against Bulgaria on just his second appearance.

“Where I used to see myself as a youngster, now I’m not that youngster any more,” he added. “I’m more the senior player and I need to mentor these young lads coming through. We’re a family.”

      94. MEET THE REF

István Kovács will take charge of the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final between Cymru and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff on Thursday night.

The 41-year-old from Romania has been a FIFA official since 2018 and was the referee for the 2025 UEFA Champions League Final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

Kovács was the referee the last time Cymru were in play-off semi-final action in Cardiff as he was the man in the middle of the 4-1 win over Finland in March 2024 (below).

Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi, also from Romania, are the assistant referees while Tobias Stieler of Germany is the Fourth official. Dennis Higler of the Netherlands is the VAR.

      95. PAPER ROUND

Ethan Ampadu has reflected on Cymru’s success in reaching the 2022 FIFA World Cup this week as his side prepare to take on Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday.

Cymru have qualified for two previous World Cup finals in 1958 and 2022 and both were achieved through the play-offs. Now Craig Bellamy’s side will look to reach consecutive finals for the first time via the same play-off path.

      96. PREPARATIONS

The Cymru squad took to the training ground earlier today as preparations for Thursday’s match against Bosnia & Herzegovina began.

      97. WILSON ON CYMRU DEBUT AND FAMILY SUPPORT

Harry Wilson reflected on his Cymru career in a recent interview with UEFA and how the support of his family acted as a motivation for him to make it as a professional player.

Wilson was just 16 when he came off the bench against Belgium in 2013 to set a record that still stands. Now 29, Wilson has now scored 17 goals in 67 senior international appearances, including a hat-trick in the 7-1 win over North Macedonia last November.

“Obviously it’s a long time ago now, but my memories from that evening were a mixture of nerves and excitement,” said Wilson. “I think they were the main ones.

“Obviously when Chris Coleman gave me the nod to go on it was the realisation that, “Wow, I’m going to come on for my country, something I’ve dreamt about since I was a little boy.” So, I think when that moment happened I was just desperate to get on the pitch and try and get a touch of the ball.”

Born in Corwen, Wilson came through the ranks at Liverpool and this season has been in superb form for Fulham in the Premier League. “I could see how hard it was for my mum and dad and they changed jobs numerous times to make sure they were getting me to training on time.,” he explained.

“I didn’t feel pressure, but I could see the commitment they were making to give me that best opportunity, and I knew I wanted to do it, not just for myself but for them as well. There wasn’t one time where I was sat in that car thinking, ‘Oh, I can’t be bothered tonight.’

“I always wanted to keep turning up and they were always giving me that opportunity to. So, when I saw how hard they worked to get me there, that kind of gave me the motivation to make sure I achieved what I wanted to.”

      98. PAPER ROUND

Brennan Johnson made the front pages this morning as the Cymru squad begin their preparations for Thursday’s huge 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Head coach Craig Bellamy will be without striker Kieffer Moore and the defensive duo of Ben Davies and Chris Mepham through injury. A victory would mean a winner-takes-all match against either Northern Ireland or Italy next Tuesday for a place at the finals.

      99. PREVIOUS MEETINGS

There have been just four previous fixtures between Cymru and Bosnia and Herzegovina with Cymru still looking for their first win as the two nations prepare to meet in Cardiff on Thursday night.

The first meeting took place back in February 2003 as goals from Robert Earnshaw and John Hartson earned Cymru a 2-2 draw in an international friendly in Cardiff.

The two nations would then meet again in another friendly at Llanelli in August 2012 with Bosnia and Herzegovina claiming a 2-0 win.

The draw for EURO 2016 qualifying would place Cymru and Bosnia and Herzegovina together in Group B and the two sides would play out a 0-0 draw in Cardiff in October 2014.

Bosnia and Herzegovina would win the return match 2-0 in Zenica a year later, but it would prove to be a night of celebration for Chris Coleman’s side as elsewhere a 2-1 win for Cyprus in Israel meant that Cymru would qualify for their first major tournament in 58 years.

      101. DYLAN LAWLOR’S CYMRU WORLD CUP TWIST

Cymru defender Dylan Lawlor (below) was at the Cardiff City Stadium as a fan as Gareth Bale scored the goal that sealed qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Ukraine.

Now the 20-year-old is part of Craig Bellamy’s squad with Cymru just two victories away from securing a place at the World Cup this summer following an excellent season with Cardiff City.

“I’ve thought about it, and when I talk to people about it I get butterflies because I’m so excited,” he explained to Sgorio recently when asked about potentially reaching the World Cup finals. “I watched the game against Ukraine and I remember the whole day. What a game.”

Lawlor made a huge impression on his senior Cymru debut as he picked up the Man of the Match award in the 1-0 over Kazakhstan in September last year, and head coach Craig Bellamy was asked about the defender at his squad announcement this week.

“He’s an outstanding player with an outstanding future,” said Bellamy. “He’s been used brilliantly by Cardiff City, they’re definitely helping us with Wales. I see a player who will just keep developing”

      102. SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy has named his squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Play-Offs with Bosnia and Herzegovina the semi-final opponents on Thursday, 26 March in Cardiff.

Striker Kieffer Moore and defensive duo Ben Davies and Chris Mepham miss out through injury while Danny Ward returns as one of four goalkeepers along with Rabbi Matondo, who scored his only Cymru goal in the 3-1 win over Kazakhstan at the start of the qualifying campaign.

      103. BELLAMY ON TOUGH BOSNIA TEST

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy is expecting a difficult test against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff as his side look to move one step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I’ve watched a lot of their games, and I have to be impressed,” explained Bellamy in an interview with UEFA . “It will be a tough game. Their physicality is exceptional, they’re disciplined, well coached and they’re experienced.

“They have a lot of quality. They get behind the ball very quickly. In transition, they’re exceptional. One of the better teams in Europe. They always end up with an effort on goal, so we have to be aware of that.

“There’s a lot of complications about the game, but there has to be. This is the play-offs to go to a World Cup, so we have to expect that.”
