      2. Match summary

Cymru opened their qualification campaign for the UEFA Under 21 Championship with a defeat in an entertaining match at Rodney Parade, which was the definition of the old adage, a game of two halves.

Cymru took a 30-second lead in the match through Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, which stunned Denmark.

The Danes looked useful going forward and once the frustration of conceding such an early goal wore off, they created several chances to equalise. However, it was Cymru who would score again. Nyakuhwa turned provider to set Christopher Popov free to make it 2-0.

After Evan Watts pulled off a series of fine saves to deny Denmark, he was eventually beaten when Thomas Jørgensen netted to keep the visitors in touch with their hosts.

Denmark turned on the style in the second half with the Cymru defence struggling to cope with their counterattacks.

The home crowd at Rodney Parade was stunned as Denmark scored five goals to turn this game around with Adam Daghim, Conrad Harder, Oscar Schwartau, August Priske and Silas Andersen all on the scoresheet.

“It’s been a really good week, and good to get all the lads back together again. We’ve had a couple of good days on the grass and there’s a real good buzz around the place.

“We expect them [Denmark] to be aggressive. They’ve got good players and they’re a good side. I expect them to come out of the block fast as we will on the night.

      54. JONES EXCITED WITH BIANCHERI MAIDEN U21 CALL-UP

“It’s been a fascinating journey,” said Jones about the forward. “He’s come through the system with us. What we try to do with the younger age group players is encourage them to have those experiences when they’re younger to help them make their decisions.

“We always feel fully confident of what we create in all age groups in terms of our environment and what it feels like, and should feel like, to represent our country.

“It was something he felt he needed to explore and all we could do was support him. The difficulty is that the scrutiny is a lot more in the older age groups.

“I’ve had two calls with him since he’s returned that were positive. ‘It just wasn’t Wales’ was quite a nice line for him to give us to know that we’d have the confidence to select him back into our environment, so we have brought him back in and he’s itching to go.”

      55. MATTY JONES HAS HUNGER AND BELIEF FOR NEW CYMRU U21 CAMPAIGN

“We came so close to qualification,” explained Jones in his squad announcement. “We’ve spoken about qualification and what that means to us, but also I’ve spoken a lot about my remit in this role and the importance of projecting players to our national team. It’s definitely made me more hungry.

“Desire is a massive thing as a coach, and I want to be able to pass that on and create motivation and inspiration for these young lads.”

      56. SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT

Matty Jones has announced his Cymru U21 squad for their opening 2027 UEFA U21 EURO qualifier against Denmark.

Jones has selected a 23-player squad for the clash with the top seeds in Group I, taking place at Rodney Parade on Monday, September 8 (7:30pm).

There are welcome returns for Luke Harris, Ben Lloyd and Ed James, who rejoin the Cymru setup for the first time since March, while four players receive their first U21 call-ups: Vimal Yoganathan, Gabriele Biancheri, Dan Cox, and Kit Margetson. Click here to read more.

      57. MATTY JONES EXCITED FOR RODNEY PARADE RETURN FOR 2027 EURO QUALIFIERS

“Rodney Parade has become a favourite for all involved due to making some real positive memories there with the last U21s group, and the relationship between the association and the club has allowed us to have gains that have certainly helped us on the pitch,” he said.

“With everyone being active in regard to engagement, we have gone from 150 spectators at our Men’s U21s fixtures to now seeing figures around 3,000.

“This is all credit to the work behind the scenes and the effort made by the local people of Newport. We would like this campaign to expand that and get people travelling further afield to watch our next generation of international players.”

      58. RODNEY PARADE TO HOST CYMRU’S 2027 UEFA U21 EURO QUALIFIERS
