      1. Match Summary

Cymru are undefeated in their quest to qualify for the 2025 UEFA U21 European Championships in Georgia and Romania after a fine 1-0 win over Iceland.

The opening exchanges were uneventful but the game burst into life when Joe Low found the back of the net with a header from a cross into the box from Tom Davies. It was a lovely cross and a wonderful goal.

Low’s goal proved to be the winner but Cymru were made to work hard for the three points in the second half when Josh Thomas was sent off for serious foul play following a late challenge on Adam Benediktsson.

Iceland did their best to find an equaliser and used the extra player to stretch Cymru but they dug deep and defended resolutely to secure the points.

      28. KICK OFF!

        The match is underway.

      29. Warm-ups are nearly complete. Kick off is nearing.

      30. Fin Stevens captains Cymru tonight against Iceland in this UEFA U21 Championship qualifier.

      31. The players have arrived at Rodney Parade with Charlie Savage & Co being met by the mascots.

      32. Here’s a look at the state of play in Group I ahead of this evening’s fixture. Iceland lead the way in the group after beating Czechia 2-1 in their opening qualifier before a 1-0 win over Lithuania last month. Cymru began their qualifying campaign with a 2-2 draw with Denmark, before a 3-2 victory over Lithuania and 1-1 draw with Czechia.

      33. Fin Stevens spoke to the media on Wednesday and discussed having home advantage twice during the window.

“It’s massive for us because the last three games have all been away. To get two home games in with the home crowd and hopefully we’ll get a lot of supporters in because that would give us a big boost. Iceland have got a few good players that we’ve had a look at and that will be a task for us. But we’ve looked at ways to break them down and I think we’re in a good place.”

      34. This double-header will be Cymru’s first home games of the qualifying campaign and head coach Matty Jones believes the onus is now on his side to take performances to Iceland and Denmark.

Speaking in his squad announcement press conference, Jones said: “We’ve played against higher-ranked teams. It’s been challenging and it’s been difficult, but it’s allowed us to showcase our robustness defensively and our resilience in our approach. Our counter-attacking ability has got us goals and results, but it slightly changes when you’re at home and the responsibility is on us to be creative and take the game to Iceland and Denmark. Challenges await and I’m sure the players will be prepared for it.”
