MATCH SUMMARY
Jess Fishlock became the record goalscorer, Mary McAteer scored her first ever goal, Cymru topped their qualifying group and gained promotion back to League A of the UEFA Nations League. It was a good day at the office for Rhian Wilkinson in her first campaign as Cymru manager.
Cymru will now await the outcome of the Play-Off draw for UEFA EURO 2025 as topping their League B group earns them the opportunity towards qualifying for their first ever major tournament.
This was a completely dominant performance for Cymru, who enjoyed the majority of possession and chances in this match.
Goals in this game were inevitable and Fishlock seemed destined to score and did just that in the 8th minute and when the ball crossed the white paint between the posts, it confirmed her as Cymru’s all-time top goalscorer.
Her 45th Cymru goal put her above Ian Rush (28), Gareth Bale (31) and Helen Ward (44) in that incredible list of talent.
Whilst Fishlock has a career full of goals and experience, Mary McAteer’s career is on the rise and the striker netted her first goal for Cymru with an assist from the record breaker during the first half.
There are tougher games ahead for Cymru in the Play-Offs and they will learn their fate on Friday (19 July) when the draw takes place in Nyon.

JAMES TO CAPTAIN CYMRU
Cymru head coach Rhian Wilkinson has confirmed that midfielder Angharad James will captain Cymru against Kosovo.
Speaking at her pre-match press conference, Wilkinson said: “I think Angharad is someone that we know is an incredible leader and captain for this team. I’m very fortunate in that we have an incredibly experienced team with a lot of potential captains and a lot of leaders.
“I’ve told the team is that after these group games I’ll name a captain. internally, I think there’s an expectation from me to the team that it doesn’t matter who wears the armband because everyone leads in different ways and they all have to show up on game day.”
James said: “I think Angharad is someone that we know is an incredible leader and captain for this team. I’m very fortunate in that we have an incredibly experienced team with a lot of potential captains and a lot of leaders. I’ve told the team is that after these group games I’ll name a captain. internally, I think there’s an expectation from me to the team that it doesn’t matter who wears the armband because everyone leads in different ways and they all have to show up on game day.
“The biggest honour is putting the jersey on and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to do that for many years and hopefully many more to come. Of course it’s a very proud moment for me to be captain, but it’s never about me and it’s about the team. It’s about the team doing well, being successful and hopefully together, as players and staff, we can achieve that at the end of this year.
“I lead in a different way to a lot of players that we’ve got in the team, but that’s the beauty of a team and the group because we’ve got many different leaders at different levels too.
“We’ve got some youngsters coming through who are showing really good leadership skills and then we’ve got the experienced older players. A mixture together is a good thing and will hopefully bring us success.”

FISHLOCK HAS SIGHTS SET ON GOALSCORING RECORD
Jess Fishlock has her sights set on breaking the Cymru goalscoring record in Tuesday’s game against Kosovo. Fishlock equalled Helen Ward’s record of 44 goals when she netted against Croatia on Friday evening and will have the opportunity to overtake her this week.
Speaking after the game against Croatia, Fishlock said: “I mean it’s so special and every time I put the jersey on it’s special. To keep creeping up to these milestones is huge, but I’ll always say it because I wouldn’t be here without, not just these girls in the present, but everyone in the past too. I’ve been super lucky and fortunate to play with some outstanding players and I still get to do that now. Thanks to all of them really.
“I love Wardie. She was huge for us and I have such fond memories of playing with her all the time. My mum actually said that she doesn’t want me to break this record because she loves Wardie and she told me to just let her have it. But I don’t know if I’m going to do that, so sorry mum!
“I wish Helen was here [in Croatia] and I wish I could see her, so we could have this moment together.”
