Match Summary
Cymru deserved their win against Montenegro in the UEFA Nations League as they consolidated second place in Group B4. Craig Bellamy’s team dominated possession and dictated the tempo of the match.
Bellamy named seven changes to the starting line-up that had played in the previous match against Iceland with Joe Allen being named amongst the substitutes on the bench.
Neco Williams, David Brooks and Harry Wilson were impossible to play against and the Montenegro defence struggled to contain them. Their creative play created chance after chance for Cymru.
Igor Nikić was busy flying across his goal line on multiple occasions to deny Brooks and Wilson but he was unable to prevent a goal when one of his defenders conceded a penalty.
After Cymru had won a corner, Wilson received the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box where he was tripped. The referee was quick to award the penalty and Wilson stepped up to tuck it away in the back of the net.
Montenegro made a quadruple substitution at half-time but it did little to change their fortunes. After an initial flurry of activity, Cymru gained control once again and always looked the more likely to score.
Nathan Broadhead made a positive impact when he came off the bench and came incredibly close to scoring Cymru’s second.
The second half however, will mostly be remembered for the return of Joe Allen, who returned to the red jersey of Cymru after coming out of international retirement.
Bellamy will be happy with the performance as he remains unbeaten in his first four games in charge of Cymru and most pleasingly of all will be that he’s seen the majority of his squad get some game time.

HALF-TIME: Cymru 1-0 Montenegro
That was a fantastic first half from Cymru and they deserving their lead at half-time through Wilson’s penalty.

Cymru go into the break with 72% possession and 93% passing accuracy.

Wilson nearly scores a second but his strike goes wide as The Red Wall gasped at how close it was.

Great football from Cymru as Wilson does a slalom through the defence before seeing his effort denied by Nikić.
-
Wilson plays a nice ball inside that allows Brooks to break in the box. He sidesteps a defender to take a strike but the shot is collected by Nikić.

After some trickery, Wilson crosses the ball into the far post where he was looking for Burns. The crowd was expectant but Burns was unable to make contact but this was a really good chance.

Bellamy on midfield decisions
Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy spoke to the media on Sunday afternoon and was asked about midfielder Joe Allen and if he would mark his international return with an appearance against Montenegro.
“Of course he’s a gamble if you throw him in from the start because of his minutes and football this year,” said Bellamy.
“That goes for a lot of our players as well. A lot of them do very good work even though they’re not playing. Their clubs are run incredibly well. Does it match a game? Of course we all understand it doesn’t.”
Bellamy will be without regular sitting midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Jordan James through injury and suspension respectively, creating the opportunity for Allen to make his 75th Cymru appearance.
“Hopefully he kicks the ball for me tomorrow. Even if he doesn’t he’s had an incredible week for us and been really positive for us.
“We are light in the number six area, and that’s through all the age groups. We have to be creative in what we do and sometimes that adds to your strengths. We’ve seen bigger nations than ours really struggle in that [midfield] area.
“It’s a really important area for how we play. We just have to get on with it. I’m looking forward to seeing how one or two others get on in that position. They deserve it.”

Davies on high-risk rewards
Ben Davies will again captain Cymru this evening as the UEFA Nations League campaign continues against Montenegro in Cardiff and the defender spoke to the media from the team base yesterday.
“That terminology can assume we are not in control at times,” said Davies when asked about the high-risk approach. “Just because it’s close to our goal doesn’t mean we feel we are taking big risks.
“I think the more we can have the ball, it means they don’t have it. If they want to press really high then it means we have got space up front, and we have players there who can cause problems for any teams.
“Probably the biggest difference is the style of play. We’re trying to dominate with the ball. We’re trying to show that we can be good without it.
“It’s about maintaining those levels. You’ve seen in the games we’ve played that we have tried to start on the front foot, dominate the ball and create as many chances as we can.
“Look, there’s a period of adaptation that’s expected. I feel that it’s gone pretty well and that as a group there’s a lot more to come from us.”

Moore confident for Montenegro
Cymru striker Kieffer Moore has played down the suspensions to Brennan Johnson and Jordan James ahead of Monday’s UEFA Nations League match against Montenegro.
“We’re without players on Monday but it’s a squad game and we’ve got some really good players to come in,” he explained following the 2-2 draw with Iceland on Friday. “I’m sure they’ll take their chances when they get them.”
“We’ve scored four goals away from home and that’s what we’re about. We’re a high-press, high-attacking team and when we do get those chances in that style of play it’s exciting. It gets people on their feet but sometimes it can work against you as well.
“It’s still in our hands. We’re still unbeaten and we look forward to Monday.”

Burns excited by Bellamy approach
Wes Burns spoke to the media from the Cymru camp recently and shared his thoughts on head coach Craig Bellamy’s style of play.
“There’s so many similarities between how he wants to play here and what I usually play like for Ipswich,” said Burns. “At Ipswich it’s front-foot football, high press, high-risk, high-reward football, so I should slot in seamlessly here.
“Going over the meetings in the first couple of days, there’s been a lot of recap of what has gone before in the last camp. Although they’re going over it for a second time, I’m playing a little bit of catch-up in terms of the little details on defending and attacking stuff.
“I used to love watching him [Bellamy], he was my style of player to a tee. Aggressive, front-foot football, scored goals, feisty, loved a tackle, so I think there’s a different respect for someone when they cross that line and go to the manager’s side.”

Meet the Ref
Slovakian Filip Glova will take charge of the UEFA Nations League match between Cymru and Montenegro in Cardiff on Monday.
The 36-year old has been a FIFA referee since 2016 and has officiated in qualifiers for both UEFA EURO and the FIFA World Cup together with the Nations League and youth tournaments. He has also refereed club matches in the UEFA Europa League and Conference League.
Glova was the Fourth Official (below) when Cymru defeated Latvia 2-0 away in EURO qualifying in September 2023 through goals from Aaron Ramsey and David Brooks.
Daniel Polacek and Peter Bednar are the Assistant Referees and Lukáš Dzivjak will be the Fourth Official. Michal Očenáš is the VAR and he will be assisted by Martin Dohal. All of the officials are from Slovakia.
-
Previous meetings
There have been four previous meetings between Cymru and Montenegro, with Cymru winning the last two fixtures which were played 13 years apart.
Montenegro have also claimed two victories over Cymru, winning 2-1 in a friendly in August 2009 before repeating their success a year later with a 1-0 win in UEFA EURO qualifying.
Goals from Steve Morison and Aaron Ramsey sealed a 2-1 win for Cymru under the late Gary Speed in September 2011, before Kieffer Moore (below) and Harry Wilson delivered for Craig Bellamy’s side last month to repeat the scoreline.
-
Suspension update
Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy will be without Brennan Johnson and Jordan James (below) for the UEFA Nations League match against Montenegro on Monday through suspension.
Both players were booked in the 2-2 draw with Iceland on Friday and Cymru have now received 11 yellow cards from the opening three Group B4 games.
-
As it stands
Cymru sit two points behind UEFA Nations League Group B4 leaders Türkiye heading into Monday’s fixtures and head coach Craig Bellamy will be looking for his side to complete the double over Montenegro.
Goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson earned Cymru a 2-1 win in Montenegro last month and the two nations meet again in Cardiff on Monday (7.45pm). Meanwhile, Türkiye, who are also undefeated, defeated Montenegro 1-0 on Friday night and now head to Iceland for their fourth match in the group.
