MATCH SUMMARY
Cymru’s opening U17 EURO finals match in Cyprus ended in a 2-0 defeat against Denmark, after the Danes found the back of the net either side of half time.
Craig Knight’s side were drawn in to a physical battle in their own half for the majority of the first half, but managed to stand their ground and defend several corners. Just as it looked like Cymru had done enough to head into half time without conceding, Denmark broke the deadlock in open play as Chidozie Obi rounded Luis Lines and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Minutes into the second half, Denmark doubled the lead through Sofus Johannesen. As Cymru looked to play out of the back, a misplaced pass flew towards the head of Johannesen who made no mistake in finding the back of the net with his header.
Despite the early second half setback, Cymru quickly settled into the second half and made opportunities of their own. The strongest of the chances came to full back Jac Thomas, who forced a diving save from Tobias Breum-Harild.
Cymru will look to bounce back on Thursday when they will face Austria at Ammochostos in Larnace (KO 18:30).

HALF-TIME: Denmark 1-0 Cymru
A challenging first half for Cymru out in Cyprus, dealing well with the physical presence of the Danish attack and their set pieces for the majority of the half. The deadlock was finally broken moments before the half time whistle through Obi’s calm finish, but Craig Knight’s side are still in the game and will be hoping for a response in the second half.

Defender Brayden Clarke says he’s hoping to be a guiding light for his Cymru teammates at this year’s tournament after featuring in the 2023 finals.
In an interview on RedWall+, Clarke said: “I’m really excited to have another great opportunity out in Cyprus with the lads. I think the all around experience in Hungary was big for me, especially as a young player.
“I think I can take the experience and explain to the other players how it will be because it’s a big tournament for us all involved.
“I’ve had a conversation with Craig Knight about it because obviously I’m the only one who had the experience last year. I think I can take big learning from it and hopefully be a bit more of a lead.”
