      Live ReportMatch Summary

      1. JAMES ON FIRST CYMRU GOAL

“I’ve been waiting for it, it’s been a while,” said Jordan James to BBC Sport Wales. “It just fell to me at the right time. I work on getting into the box and into the right spaces, and I was able to do that. DJ crossed it in perfectly and I was able to tap it in.

“It was tough, they were hard to breakdown. We knew it was going to be a tough place to come, but we got three points and that’s the main thing when you come to places like this. It’s hard, no matter what anyone says, it’s tough to breakdown such a low block.”

      2. AMPADU ON CYMRU WIN

“We needed the win, and we got the win,” explained Cymru captain Ethan Ampadu to BBC Sport Wales after the match. “I thought we had to be patient, we had a lot of the ball and a lot of chances.

“We would have liked to have scored more goals, but at the end of the day we’ve got the win and we’re happy with that. We’re a team who know our attacking quality and we can produce. It’s not a lack of desire, the desire’s there it’s just that on the day we didn’t score more goals.”

      3. MATCH SUMMARY:

Jordan James was the hero for Cymru as his first senior international goal proved to be the difference in Vaduz, but he and captain Ethan Ampadu will now miss the decisive match against North Macedonia on Tuesday through suspension.

This was a must-win match for Cymru, and head coach Craig Bellamy made four changes to his starting line-up, partly enforced through the injury that Ben Davies suffered in the defeat against Belgium last month and Harry Wilson’s suspension.

The dynamic of the group shifted before kick-off as Belgium were held to a surprise 1-1 draw against Kazakhstan in Astana. The result meant that a victory for Cymru against Liechtenstein would leave three nations still able to claim top spot in the final round of fixtures on Tuesday night.

Liechtenstein went into the match still searching for their first points of the campaign, but it was Cymru, backed by over 3,000 travelling fans, that dominated the opening exchanges without creating any clear chances on goal.

The first effort on target arrived after 19 minutes as Jordan James combined with Nathan Broadhead, but James’ effort was saved by Benjamin Büchel. Minutes later, Broadhead rounded the keeper but could not keep his opportunity on target.

Broadhead thought he had given Cymru the lead on 25 minutes but a VAR review disallowed the goal for an offside in the build-up. It would prove to be the best chance of the opening half, and while Cymru continued to dominate proceedings, Liechtenstein were increasingly growing in confidence as it remained 0-0 at half-time.

Cymru continued to test the Liechtenstein defence after the restart with Broadhead, Dan James and Neco Williams all going close to opening the scoring before Jordan James finally put the ball in the net. A superb pass from Williams found Dan James who squared the ball across goal for the midfielder to finish.

Liechtenstein created a rare opportunity for themselves on 77 minutes, but Andreas Malin could only head over from a corner despite finding himself unmarked. However, the chance did not spark a revival for the home side as Cymru continued to dominate. No further goals would follow and Cymru depart Vaduz with a 1-0 win.

The performance may have been more convincing than the result, but the biggest concern for Cymru will be the two yellow cards shown to Jordan James and captain Ethan Ampadu that will rule both midfielders out of Tuesday’s decisive match against North Macedonia. Cymru now need a win to claim at least second place in Group J.

      4. FULL-TIME VERDICT: Jordan James picked the perfect time to score his first international goal as Cymru claimed a 1-0 win in Vaduz. Cymru dominated throughout the contest but were left frustrated for long periods by the defensive approach of the home side. However, patience proved to be the key, and it was James who made the difference on the hour mark as he found himself on the end of a cross to make no mistake from close range. However, bookings for James and captain Ampadu will now rule them out of Tuesday’s huge match against North Macedonia in Cardiff, a match that Cymru must now win.

      5. A big chance for Koumas but he fails to connect properly with the ball. Cymru are still looking to add to their lead as we head into added time.

      6. Yellow card

        AMPADU Ethan

      7. Ampadu is cautioned and will now miss the match against North Macedonia. That’s a huge blow for Cymru who will now be without two key midfielders on Tuesday night through suspension.

      8. Substitution

        JOHNSON Brennan replaces THOMAS Sorba

      9. Substitution

        Sandro Wolfinger replaces Alessio Hasler

      10. Substitution

        Severin Schlegel replaces Aron Sele

      11. Yellow card

        KOUMAS Lewis

      12. A rare chance for Liechtenstein as Malin heads over from a corner. The fact he had a free header will be a concern for Cymru, they still need to stay focused on their defensive responsibilities.

      13. Substitution

CULLEN Liam Jamie replaces JAMES Jordan Anthony

      14. 📸 The Red Wall have been ffantastig here in Vaduz.

      15. Substitution

Villiam Pizzi replaces Fabio Luque Notaro

      16. Rubin Colwill comes off the bench to try his luck but Büchel is up to the challenge. There could be a few more opportunities for him before the final whistle though.

      17. Yellow card

        Fabio Luque Notaro

      18. 📸 Jordan James enjoyed that one.

      19. The atmosphere has definitely changed at the Rheinpark Stadion following that crucial opening goal from Jordan James. Cymru still have plenty of time to increase the advantage.

      20. Substitution

COLWILL Rubin replaces BROADHEAD Nathan Paul

      21. Substitution

        Jonas Weissenhofer replaces Emanuel Zünd

      22. Substitution

BROOKS David replaces JAMES Daniel Owen

      23. Substitution

        KOUMAS Lewis replaces HARRIS Mark

      24. Yellow card

        JAMES Jordan Anthony

      25. With the adrenaline pumping, Jordan James follows up his goal with a yellow card that will rule him out of Tuesday’s decisive match against North Macedonia.

      26. GOAL! Jordan James with his first Cymru goal as he converts a Dan James cross to give his side a deserved lead.

      27. Goal

        JAMES Jordan Anthony

      28. This time Williams goes close as his header goes across goal and wide of the far post. Cymru are really testing the Liechtenstein defence now.

      29. So close again! Dan James hits the post! A great cross to the back post from Thomas, but it remains scoreless.

      30. Another big chance goes begging as Broadhead fails to connect with a Dan James cross despite being at full stretch.

      31. Here we go. No changes for Cymru at half-time. An early goal would be very welcome right now.

      32. HALF-TIME VERDICT: A dominant yet frustrating opening half for Cymru. Broadhead thought he had given his side a deserved lead midway through the half before VAR intervened to cut the celebrations short. Liechtenstein’s defensive approach will not have come as a surprise to Cymru, and they will need to stay patient to get the win they need. Expect a few changes very soon if the scoreline remains the same as Cymru are not short of attacking options on the bench.

      33. Yellow card

        Nicolas Hasler

      34. Büchel is called into action again to deny Harris from opening the scoring. The Liechtenstein keeper has done well so far.

      35. Bellamy and Cremers will not be too concerned with what they have seen so far. Cymru have plenty of alternative attacking options on the bench and there will be changes in the 2nd half. Liechtenstein can only hold on for so long with this defensive approach.

      36. Dan James and Broadhead are combining well on the right side of the field. Cymru could really do with a goal before half-time, they more than deserve it.

      37. The celebrations are cut short as Broadhead’s goal is disallowed following a VAR review. Cymru need to make sure the decision doesn’t disrupt their rhythm.

      38. Goal

        BROADHEAD Nathan Paul

      39. 📸 James is seeing plenty of the ball and every time he’s in possession, he’s surrounded by Liechtenstein players. They clearly see him as a danger.

      40. So close! Broadhead takes the ball around Büchel but his effort goes wide. A great chance for Cymru to take the lead.

      41. The first shot on target as Jordan James’ shot is saved by Büchel. Cymru are doing everything right at the moment.

      42. Important that Cymru don’t get frustrated by Liechtenstein’s defensive approach, which won’t have come as a surprise. A goal will make a huge difference, and the fans need something to cheer.

      43. Cymru have been dominant in the opening exchanges but are yet to test Büchel in the Liechtenstein goal. Nothing to concern Cymru at the other end of the field though as Liechtenstein are happy to sit on a 0-0 draw.

      44. 📸 The Cymru eleven at the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz.

      45. An early chance for Cymru as Williams find Harris with a lovely ball through the deep, defensive Liechtenstein lines. Cymru need to be patient, keep moving the ball and wear down their opponents.

      46. The anthems are complete and Cymru kick things off here in Vaduz with over 3,000 travelling fans behind them.

      47. The warm-ups are done. Kick off is next.

      48. The Cymru squad take a look around the scenic surroundings of the Rheinpark Stadion

      49. Piet Cremers will take the place of the suspended Craig Bellamy on the touchline in Vaduz this evening

      50. YELLOW WARNING

Four players in the Cymru starting line-up are one yellow card away from missing the final match of the campaign against North Macedonia in Cardiff on Tuesday night.

Joe Rodon, Jordan James (below), Neco Williams and captain Ethan Ampadu will be suspended if their are cautioned against Liechtenstein this evening. Josh Sheehan is also one yellow card away from suspension and is named on the bench, while Chris Mepham is not in the matchday squad.

“Of course, we have one eye on it,” said head coach Craig Bellamy yesterday. “But, for us, it’s play the strongest possible team we have right now and take care of what we feel might be Liechtenstein’s weaknesses.”

      51. GROUP J UPDATE

There was a surprise result in Astana this afternoon as group leaders Belgium were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Kazakhstan.

Dastan Satpayev put the home side and at the age of just 17 became the youngest-ever goalscorer for Kazakhstan, but captain Timothy Castagne levelled for Belgium just after half-time.

The draw means that Belgium have missed the chance to qualify automatically for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but they have another chance to complete the job when they take on Liechtenstein in Liège on Tuesday night.

Here is the updated Group J table ahead of Cymru’s match against Liechtenstein.

      52. TEAM NEWS

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy has made four changes to his starting line-up from the team that lost 4-2 against Belgium in Cardiff last month.

Harry Wilson and Ben Davies are both enforced changes through suspension and injury respectively, while David Brooks drops down to the bench and Ben Cabango is not included in the matchday squad.

Dylan Lawlor, Jay Dasilva, Dan James and Nathan Broadhead come into the first XI while Ethan Ampadu captains the team.

Meanwhile, Liechtenstein head coach Konrad Fünfstück has made three changes from the team that lost 4-0 to Kazakhstan last month as Livio Meier, Andreas Malin and Dennis Salanović come into the starting line-up.

      55. The stage is set as Cymru prepare to take on Liechtenstein at the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz. Team news to follow shortly.

      56. AMPADU TO LEAD CYMRU IN VADUZ

Ethan Ampadu will captain Cymru against Liechtenstein in Vaduz on what will be the 25-year-old’s 59th senior international appearance for his country.

“I didn’t give it a second thought,” said head coach Craig Bellamy when asked about the decision. “Look at how many caps he has, how many games he’s played.”

With Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies ruled out through injury, Ampadu is seen as the natural choice to wear the armband having captained Leeds United since July 2024.

“He’s not your normal 25-year-old,” Bellamy added. “He’s a smart human being and I see it as normal progression.”

      57. HOW IT STANDS

Here’s a reminder of why this is such a significant matchday in Group J with four of the five teams in action and the top three places in the standings yet to be decided.

Belgium can book their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this afternoon when they take on Kazakhstan in Astana (2pm). A victory for the Red Devils would cement their place at the top of the group.

Cymru then take on Liechtenstein in Vaduz (5pm) and a win would move Craig Bellamy’s side level with North Macedonia on points ahead of Tuesday’s crunch match.

Should Cymru finish as runners-up in the group it would guarantee a home tie in the play-off semi-finals in March. However, finishing third behind Belgium and North Macedonia would result in Cymru’s play-off place being awarded for their performance in the last UEFA Nations League, and with it a semi-final match away from home.

The best case scenario? Well, should Belgium take just a point or less from their final two games against Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein, and Cymru win their two remaining games, Bellamy’s team would top the group and qualify automatically without the need for a March play-off. We can dream.

      58. BELLAMY NOT LOOKING PAST LIECHTENSTEIN

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy is not looking further than the next match as his side complete their Group J campaign against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.

“Tomorrow’s the most important game because it’s our next game,” Bellamy explained. “Now, if it’s actually turning out the way we want it to be, then we’ll start having an eye on it, but not until then.”

However, Bellamy will not be on the touchline in Vaduz as he serves a suspension. “Actually I might enjoy it more, being upstairs where I can see the game from new viewpoints,” he added.

“So it’s going to be a little bit different, but the work’s done, we’ve gone through the scenarios. If anything does happen, we have real capable coaches who will be able to communicate better than I’m able to do. So I’m completely comfortable with it.”

Cymru will have around 3,000 fans at the Rheinpark Stadion on Saturday and Bellamy paid tribute to those once again making the journey to support his side.

“As a head coach, I have to be honest, the support has been the most pleasing side,” he explained. “It’s been a credit to the previous managers who’ve been able to build this. We used to be envious of other countries having that, now I feel we have that.

“I feel we’re a big football nation. I always thought we were and, tomorrow night, you’ll get that feeling again. We’ve just got to give them that tournament to get to.”

      59. TRAIN IN THE RAIN

The Cymru squad completed their preparations at the team base in Cardiff this morning before heading to Liechtenstein for the penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Craig Bellamy’s side currently sit third in Group J and need to beat Liechtenstein on Saturday to move level on points with North Macedonia before the two nations meet at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

Harry Wilson will miss the match against Liechtenstein in Vaduz through suspension but will be available for the final match of the campaign.

      60. MEET THE REF

Juxhin Xhaja of Albania (below) will take charge of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Liechtenstein and Cymru in Vaduz on Saturday.

The 35-year-old has officiated across all of UEFA’s club competitions over the last six seasons together with international European qualifiers and Nations League fixtures.

Arber Zalla and Rejdi Avdo are the assistant referees while Enea Jorgji will be the fourth official. Angelos Evangelou of Greecce will be the VAR and he will be assisted by Kreshnik Barjamaj. All of the officials apart from Evangelou are from Albania.

      61. BROOKS ON WORLD CUP AMBITION

David Brooks will look to help Cymru move a step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Craig Bellamy’s side prepare to take on Liechtenstein in Vaduz on Saturday (5pm).

“It’s one of the biggest honours, going to those tournaments and representing your country,” said Brooks this week. “The full focus is trying to help the gaffer and the team make that dream come true.”

      62. PREPARATIONS

The Cymru squad trained earlier today ahead of Saturday’s penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein in Vaduz.

Ben Davies, Ben Cabango and Kieffer Moore withdrew from the squad at the start of the week through injury, and while Harry Wilson will miss the match through suspension, he will be back in contention for the match against North Macedonia in Cardiff on Tuesday night.

      63. PREPARATIONS CONTINUE

The Cymru squad were back on the training ground this morning ahead of their final two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.

Dan James (below) is back in the squad after a recent injury. “I only missed one game for Leeds but I was gutted to miss the last camp with Wales,” explained James to Sgorio following the session.

“It’s hard to watch from afar and not be able to influence anything. I’m itching to go and I’ve put myself in a good position. I feel good mentally and physically to go and really put a stamp on this week and really help out the team.”

      64. ARMISTICE DAY

The Cymru squad and FAW staff observed a period of silence ahead of training this morning.

      65. AS IT STANDS IN GROUP J

This international window will decide the final standings in Group J with Belgium, North Macedonia and Cymru all still in with a chance of finishing top and earning automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, current group leaders Belgium are the clear favourites as they complete their fixtures against Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein, and they could claim top position with a victory away to Kazakhstan on Saturday afternoon.

Cymru also have two games remaining as Craig Bellamy’s side prepare to take on Liechtenstein and then North Macedonia, the latter match in Cardiff being the one remaining fixture for the visitors who are currently three points ahead of Cymru in the group.

      66. PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Cymru have a perfect record against Liechtenstein having won all four of the previous meetings between the two nations without conceding a single goal.

The first match took place in November 2006 at Wrexham as Cymru registered a 4-0 friendly victory. Jason Koumas scored twice in the 1st half before current Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy added a third on 77 minutes. Chris Llewellyn then came off the bench to score his one and only senior international goal.

The first competitive match between the two countries was in October 2008 when they were drawn together in World Cup qualifying. A goal from Dave Edwards and an own goal from Mario Frick proved to be enough to earn a 2-0 win in Cardiff, and the same scoreline occurred in the return match in Vaduz a year later through goals from David Vaughan and Aaron Ramsey.

The most recent match also took place in Cardiff back in June this year as Joe Rodon, Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore (below) scored the goals in a comfortable 3-0 victory.

      67. BELLAMY TARGETS TWO WINS

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy sat down with the media on Wednesday morning to discuss his squad and the target he has set them ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.

“We need to win two,” said Bellamy. “Liechtenstein, we expect to win and I’m not going to shy away from that. North Macedonia is a different game, but I feel they’ve been fortunate not to lose. They’re games I believe we will have a lot of possession in, and we have to be able to create chances from having that possession.

“There’s no easy route, but to get to a World Cup there isn’t supposed to be. If we finish second then we could avoid a couple of top teams at their grounds (in the play-offs), and that’s a motivation for us. I just want us to try and win every game.”
