Genero Adran North | 2023/24 season preview

Following Wrexham’s promotion to the Genero Adran Premier, the Genero Adran North could be anyone’s game in 2023/24. The action gets under way on Sunday 3 September.

Connah’s Quay Nomads were runners-up to Wrexham last season, winning nine of their 12 league matches and providing a stern test to the champions at the Racecourse in front of a Welsh league record crowd of 9,511.

Star midfielder Kirstie Kural has departed for top-flight side The New Saints, but new arrival Sophie Hodson is aiming for back-to-back league titles after representing Wrexham last season. Mae Hodgers from Everton and Sophie Adams from Merseyrail are also exciting additions.

After winning the Genero Adran North title in 2021/22, Llandudno slipped to third place last season so will be hoping to mount another challenge for top spot this time around.

Reinforcements have arrived to help towards that goal, including goalkeeper Megan Robinson who kept six clean sheets for Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Genero Adran North in 2022/23 and forward Stevie Donougher who netted 27 goals in the NWWFL last season to fire Bangor to the title.

Felinheli finished fourth last season but lost just one of their final five league matches, claiming an away win at Llandudno in that time, so will aim to carry that momentum into the new campaign.

Combined with the promising signings of Hana Wellings, Jenna Allsup and Catrin Evans – the latter two returning after spells away – it is certainly an exciting time to be at Cae Seilo heading into 2023/24.

Rhyl 1879 placed fifth in their inaugural season in the Genero Adran North last term, with their tendency to leak goals costing them in key moments.

Defender Alicia Duke – part of the club’s NWWFL title-winning side in 2021/22 – has returned to help tighten up the backline, while at the other end of the pitch Sade Benjamin has joined after notching 25 goals for NFA in the third tier last season.

There is an enticing opening day fixture between Rhyl 1879 and Bangor, who have been promoted to the Genero Adran North after winning the NWWFL title at a canter last term – winning 20 of their 22 matches and losing none, scoring 120 goals.

The departures of Mia Roberts, Stevie Donougher and Jenna Allsup have been a blow, but Aron Griffith has assembled an exciting young squad captained by goalkeeper Becca Elliott who has top-flight experience with Llandudno.

NFA are also making their Genero Adran North debut after finishing fourth in the NWWFL last season, scoring 105 goals in just 21 matches.

However, Sade Benjamin and Zoe Stopford scored 43 of those goals between them and have departed this summer for Rhyl 1879 and Flint Town United respectively. Kayla Hargreaves, back at the club after a season at Rhyl 1879, will be tasked with filling that hole in attack.

Despite Llanfair United finishing sixth last season, defender Mary Bailey and forward Harriet Davies were named in the Genero Adran North Team of the Season, showcasing the potential that exists in the side.

The Powys club had the fourth best defensive record in the division in 2022/23, but at the other end of the pitch only scored 11 goals in 12 matches – highlighting the problem area for Josh Farmer.

It was a disappointing campaign for Airbus UK Broughton in 2022/23 as they finished bottom of the Genero Adran North, but the Wingmakers did claim victory over Llanfair United in their penultimate game.

Lee Starkey’s side kick off the season by hosting Flintshire rivals Connah’s Quay Nomads, who they were beaten by in the NEWFA Cup final in May when a young side showed promise for the future.
