JD Cymru North round-up: Holywell Town salvage late point against promotion rivals Llandudno

Nothing could separate JD Cymru North top two Holywell Town and Llandudno in a fiery 1-1 draw at Bartons North Wales Stadium on Friday night.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men after just three minutes as Ieuan Hewitt and Callum Stephens received straight red cards for an altercation.

Llandudno took the lead in the 20th minute as Mark Cadwallader converted from the penalty spot for his eighth league goal of the season, which remained the difference between the two sides until five minutes from time when Craig Lindfield fired home from Jake Cooke’s cross to equalise.

Holywell finished the game with nine men after Guto Williams was sent off for two quick yellow cards late on, but Llandudno could not take advantage in stoppage time as their 11-match winning streak came to an end.

The Seasiders remain top of the table though as third-place Airbus UK Broughton could only draw 1-1 away at Mold Alexandra on Saturday.

Harvey Morris bagged his first goal for Mold as he headed home from Matty Lewis’ corner in the 18th minute and the hosts held on to that lead for over an hour despite seeing teenager James Davies sent off for a second bookable offence on 65 minutes.

Airbus were reduced to 10 men themselves in the 85th minute when their own James Davies was shown a straight red card, but the Wingmakers still found an equaliser three minutes later when George Peers went on a solo run and fired past Joe Smith for his 13th league goal of the season.

Penrhyncoch claimed their first league victory of the season in emphatic style with a 6-0 win over Buckley Town at Cae Baker on Saturday.

Rhydian Davies opened the scoring for the Roosters in the 24th minute, before Buckley were reduced to 10 men moments later when Ben Guest received a straight red card. Penrhyncoch then went into the break two goals up as Ifan Burrell found the net in first half stoppage time.

The floodgates opened in the second period as Dan Owen bagged a brace either side of goals from John James and Dion Phillips. The Roosters remain bottom of the table but are now just three points adrift of safety.

Penrhyncoch earned their first league victory of the season with a 6-0 win over Buckley Town

Guilsfield earned a fifth consecutive home win with a 2-1 victory over mid-Wales derby opponents Newtown.

Results elsewhere meant that the Robins would have moved into the top three with a win, but Guilsfield took the lead after just nine minutes as Callum Bromley fired home from outside the area.

Former Guilsfield frontman Jamie Hyne equalised early in the second half as he powered home a header from Aidan McCann’s corner, but the hosts restored their advantage shortly after the hour mark as Adam Hailes met Iwan Matthews’ low ball and tucked away his second league goal of the season.

Guils forward Sam Flory received a straight red card in the 70th minute, but Gavin Allen’s side held on for victory to move just six points behind the promotion spots – with a game in hand over the teams above them.

Dave Evans marked his first game in charge of Gresford Athletic with a 2-2 draw against Rhyl 1879 at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium on Saturday.

Iwan Roberts scored for the second consecutive game to give Gresford the lead on 33 minutes, before Archie Jones equalised for Rhyl early in the second half.

The visitors were level for barely a minute though as Jake Roberts restored Gresford’s advantage, but Rhyl substitute Damase Kiwanda, who had only been on the pitch for four minutes, set up Jack Parry to equalise again on 79 minutes.

Jamie Jones’ 35th minute opener for Holyhead was quickly cancelled out by Samuel John, but the hosts restored their lead just before half-time thanks to Corey Jones’ second goal of the campaign.

Connor Owen built on his hat-trick against Gresford a fortnight ago with another goal early in the second half to double Holyhead’s advantage, with victory for Darren Garmey’s side seeing them to move up to 11th in the table – overtaking Mountain in the process.
