JD Cymru South round-up | Goytre United out of drop zone after stoppage time win

Goytre United climbed out of the JD Cymru South relegation zone with a dramatic 2-1 win in stoppage time against Penrhiwceiber Rangers at Glenhafod Park on Friday night.

Rangers captain Warren Jones put his side in front with 25 minutes on the clock, but Goytre’s new signing Josh Edwards marked his debut in style as he equalised shortly after the hour mark.

The points looked set to be shared as the clock hit 90 minutes, but Cameron Harris – who wore the Goytre armband after the departure of captain Kyran Steadman – popped up in the third minute of stoppage time to net the winning goal and earn his side a first win since the start of September. The three points saw Stephen Kelleher’s side leapfrog Rangers, who slip into the bottom three.

Newport City claimed their biggest win of the season as Lathan Garrett’s brace helped earn a 5-1 victory at home against Afan Lido on Friday.

The only goal of the first half came in the 13th minute courtesy of Danny Hillman, who made it two in two since signing for the Steelmen as he sent a looping header past Harley Tucker from Richard Noyes’ cross.

Lido equalised seven minutes after the restart thanks to Jon Hood’s calmly converted penalty, but Noyes’ corner set up Garrett to restore Newport’s lead just two minutes later.

Jordan Cotterill’s third league goal of the season quickly extended the Steelmen’s advantage, before Noyes got his third assist of the night in the 67th minute as his corner was once again headed home by Garrett.

Substitute Kofi Rowe rounded off a five-star performance from Sam Houldsworth’s side shortly before full-time with a close-range finish from Harvey Sing’s cross.

League leaders Trethomas Bluebirds claimed their fifth consecutive league victory as Mark Dunford’s side triumphed 2-0 over bottom-of-the-table Taffs Well at Rhiw Dda’r.

The Bluebirds found the breakthrough five minutes before half-time as a cross into the box was not cleared by the Wellmen, which allowed James Young to poke the ball home at the near post for his first goal since October.

Young’s strike remained the difference throughout the second half, until Tom Gameson clinched victory in the 11th minute of stoppage time as he latched onto a loose ball and rounded Taffs Well goalkeeper Iwan Hooper before providing a simple finish into the back of the net.

The Bluebirds maintained their two-point lead over second-place Llanelli Town, who earned their fourth straight win and clean sheet in a 2-0 victory at home to Llantwit Major.

The Reds immediately applied the pressure at Stebonheath and were rewarded with the opening goal on 27 minutes as Theo Wharton headed home from Taylor Jones’ corner.

Both sides had their fair share of chances in the second half, but it would be the Reds who grabbed the second of the match to wrap up victory in the 90th minute as Danny Williams tucked away his fourth goal in five games.

Cambrian United earned their first league win since November as Calum Bateman’s late goal secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Carmarthen Town at the M&P Group 3G on Saturday.

Tim Parker put the Cambrian ahead with an outrageous strike from 40 yards out in the 34th minute, but Carmarthen would level the scoreline in first half stoppage-time as Liam Thomas scored his first goal since returning to the Old Gold earlier this month.

However, Bateman, who only joined the Cambrian from Newport City last week, marked his home debut with the winning goal in the 84th minute as Carmarthen’s four-match winning streak came to an end.

Third-place Pontypridd United returned to winning ways as Dan Griffiths’ early goal was enough to see off Baglan Dragons 1-0 at the USW Sports Park.

The Dragons’ title hopes were dealt a blow by defeat to Newport City a week ago, but Andy Whittington’s side came up with the perfect response as Griffiths fired home the decisive goal in the 11th minute to secure a narrow win. They remain seven points behind league leaders Trethomas Bluebirds.

Lee Trundle returned to the scoresheet for Trefelin as his first-half strike earned a 1-0 win at home against struggling Cwmbran Celtic.

The decisive moment arrived with just 16 minutes on the clock as Trundle sent a clinical finish past Lewis Watkins for his first league goal since November. Tref have now gone four matches unbeaten and remain in fourth place, but Celtic are three points adrift of safety.

Caerau Ely climbed back into the top half with a 2-1 home win over Ammanford on Friday night.

Liam Bishop put the Young Guns ahead in the 27th minute when he fired past Luke Martin after being left unmarked from Hywel Davies’ cross. Jack Ashford then doubled the home side’s lead in style just before the hour mark as he rifled an effort into the net via the post following a well-worked team move.

Ammanford talisman Lewis Reed gave his team a lifeline as he halved the deficit with his 14th league goal of the season on 68 minutes, but Caerau Ely held on to earn their first win in 2025.
