JD Cymru South round-up | Taffs Well stage stunning second half comeback

Taffs Well staged a remarkable second half comeback as they recovered from going four goals down to draw 4-4 against Goytre United at Rhiw Dda’r on Friday night.

The Wellmen appointed Josh Anderson as their new manager last week and he endured a nightmare first half in the dugout as an own goal from Finley Hayman and strikes from Keane Watts, Kofi Rowe and Jordan Edwards put Goytre 4-0 up at the break.

However, Anderson’s half-time team talk clearly worked as Dan Bowen pulled a goal back in the 54th minute before Benjamin Parry scored just after the hour mark. Sam Johnson got the Wellmen back to within a goal in the 79th minute before he provided the equaliser from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining.

The result left Goytre without a win in their last six matches and led to the resignation of manager Laurie Marsh on Sunday.

There was also stoppage time drama in Ystrad Mynach on Friday night as league leaders Trethomas Bluebirds scored two stunning free-kicks to triumph 2-1 over Newport City.

Newport took the lead with 14 minutes on the clock as Nat Jarvis finished from close range and his goal looked to be enough to earn the Steelmen all three points until the closing stages.

Bluebirds substitute Kallum Thomas curled home a terrific free-kick to level the contest in the 89th minute, before Jack Jones replicated his teammate’s heroics by firing into the top corner from another sweetly struck set piece in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Llantwit Major extended their unbeaten streak in the JD Cymru South to nine matches with a 2-0 win at home to Afan Lido on Saturday afternoon.

Major took the lead on 66 minutes as Tom Lillico’s cross was turned home by Matty Kimmins, who bagged his sixth league goal of the season.

The hosts clinched victory eight minutes later when Jamie Baker’s foul on Kimmins inside the area allowed Tom Tweedy to convert from the penalty spot. Defeat for Lido means they slip to the bottom of the table, five points adrift of safety.

Trefelin were the weekend’s big winners as Lee Trundle starred in a 5-2 home win against Cambrian United on Saturday afternoon.

The Cam Army took an early two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Tim Parker and Jack Fox, but Trundle set up both Declan Evans and Roan Piper to get Trefelin back on terms by half-time.

Piper returned the favour to Trundle in the 68th minute as the veteran striker slammed home to give the hosts the lead for the first time, before he grabbed his third assist of the afternoon soon after as he set up Connor Goldsworthy.

Piper rounded off the scoring by completing his brace in the final 10 minutes, as Trefelin moved up to fifth place – leapfrogging the Cam Army in the process.

Pontypridd United moved up to second in the table with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Ammanford on Friday night.

Dragons captain Jarrad Wright opened the scoring just before the half hour mark as he prodded home from Jamie Veale’s cross, while Veale was the provider again for Liam Eason to double the advantage in the 77thminute. Teenager Alfie Lewis came off the bench to wrap up the win with his first senior goal deep into stoppage time.

Llanelli Town claimed their third consecutive league win as Henry Jones’ first-half penalty proved enough to beat Cwmbran Celtic 1-0 at Avondale Park.

Referee Cieran Lebreton pointed to the spot in the 38th minute and Jones stepped up to score his third goal in four matches, with victory taking Llanelli up to third in the table.

Caerau Ely moved out of the JD Cymru South relegation zone as Ollie Redhead’s stoppage time goal earned a 2-1 win over Baglan Dragons on Friday night.

It took 85 minutes for the deadlock to be broken at Cwrt yr Ala Road as Brandon Griffiths came off the bench to score his fourth league goal of the season.

Tom Randall looked to have salvaged a point for the Dragons with his equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time, but the Young Guns produced an instant response as Griffiths set up Redhead to secure all three points.

Penrhiwceiber Rangers’ impressive form continued with a 0-0 draw at home against top half Carmarthen Town on Saturday.

The Old Gold had the better opportunities during the match, but a strong defensive display and some important saves from goalkeeper Jacob Ireland proved enough to earn Rangers a point. Carmarthen are now winless in their last three league games.

Weekend results in full:

Caerau Ely 2-1 Baglan Dragons
Pontypridd United 3-0 Ammanford
Taffs Well 4-4 Goytre United
Trethomas Bluebirds 2-1 Newport City
Cwmbran Celtic 0-1 Llanelli Town
