JD Cymru South round-up | Trundle-inspired Trefelin close the gap at the top

JD Cymru South leaders Trethomas Bluebirds conceded a late equaliser for the second game in a row as they drew 2-2 away at Caerau Ely.

The Bluebirds took the lead in style midway through the first half as Jack Jones curled a stunning free kick from the edge of the area beyond Exauce Dimonekene.

The Young Guns equalised through Luke Davies, who headed home from Liam Bishop’s corner, but the visitors quickly restored their lead through Lee Baldock’s penalty.

Just when it seemed the Bluebirds would claim all three points, Caerau Ely substitute Brandon Griffiths netted from close range in the 90th minute to rescue a point for his side.

The Bluebirds dropping points meant that Trefelin moved one point behind them in second place with a 2-0 home win over Baglan Dragons.

Lee Trundle continued to steal the headlines as he opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a superb strike into the top corner from long range and Tref doubled their lead just before the hour mark thanks to summer signing Charlie Corsby’s first goal for the club.

Andy Hill’s side were reduced to 10 men as captain Connor Goldsworthy was sent off in the 89th minute, but it came too late for Baglan to take advantage.

Cwmbran Celtic were the big winners on bank holiday Monday as Tom Meechan inspired a 4-0 home win over Ammanford.

Meechan set up Cole Doolan to open the scoring in the 39th minute before Dom Connor marked his first league start of the campaign with a goal just before the hour mark.

Ammanford searched for a way back into the game, but a brace from Meechan in the final 20 minutes secured a comfortable victory for the hosts. Celtic’s Jordan Meaney was sent off in the dying stages as he received a second yellow card in the 89th minute.

After three consecutive draws, Llanelli Town returned to winning ways in style as they triumphed 3-0 over Pontypridd United at Stebonheath.

Ethan Cann was involved in all three goals for the Reds, setting up Danny Williams and Joe Lloyd either side of getting on the scoresheet himself for his third goal of the campaign.

Carmarthen Town moved up to third in the table with a 4-1 win over Cambrian United at the LHP Stadium.

Cambrian were unbeaten in the JD Cymru South this season ahead of their trip west, but found themselves two goals down inside the first four minutes as Noah Daley and Gavin Jones found the net.

A sweetly struck volley from Toby Jones saw the Old Gold open up a three-goal lead just before the break and Jones wrapped things up with another tidy finish in the 82nd minute.

Cambrian winger Ibrahim Abdul scored for the consecutive game in stoppage time, but it was little more than a consolation for the visitors.

Afan Lido claimed their first victory of the season as braces from substitutes Chris Jones and Zak Phillips helped secure a 4-1 home win over neighbours Goytre United.

Jones found the breakthrough for Lido in first half stoppage time when his free kick from out wide sailed into the top corner and he doubled the lead from the penalty spot four minutes into the second half.

16-year-old Phillips was introduced for his debut shortly after and made a superb impact, capitalising on a defensive error to make it 3-0 before adding a fourth with a neat finish from close range.

There was to be no clean sheet for Lido though as Goytre substitute Kyle Williams got his side on the scoresheet with six minutes remaining.

Newport City produced a late comeback to defeat fellow newly-promoted side Penrhiwceiber Rangers 2-1 at Glasbrook Field.

Rangers captain Warren Jones put his side ahead midway through the second half and his strike appeared to have earned the hosts their first win of the season until Newport skipper Louis Gerrard equalised from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.

The visitors’ comeback was completed in the fifth minute of stoppage time, when Newport broke away and Calum Bateman crossed for Nat Jarvis to finish from close range and break Penrhiwceiber hearts.

Llantwit Major made it back-to-back wins over the bank holiday weekend by triumphing 4-1 at home against Taffs Well.

The Wellmen were rewarded for their early pressure as Sam Johnson put them ahead on 16 minutes, but Joel Woodington set up both Josh Morgan and then Matty Kimmins to turn the game on its head before half-time.

Sean Kelly scored from a well-worked free kick routine seven minutes into the second half before teenage substitute Finn Jennings, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes, added a fourth after capitalising on a defensive error.
