Welsh Blood Service League Cup | First round review

Flint Town United knocked JD Cymry North leaders Airbus UK Broughton out of the Welsh Blood Service League Cup with a thrilling 4-3 victory at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.

Rhys Kavanagh, Harley Brindley-Peagram, Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Josh Jones all found the net as the Silkmen progressed to round two.

Denbigh Town were the big scorers in the Northern section as they triumphed 6-2 away at Buckley Town. The New Saints loanee Josh Lock scored a hat-trick on his first start for the club, Tom Weir netted twice and Olly Hansen also got in on the act.

There was late drama at Victoria Park where Llanidloes Town won 2-1 against fellow Powys side Caersws. The tie looked to be set for penalties after Rhys Hesden had cancelled out Jack Orbell’s opener, but Elliot Jones headed home from George Clarke’s corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time to send the Daffs through.

Mold Alexandra knocked out Flintshire neighbours Holywell Town in an enthralling 3-2 victory at Alyn Park. The hosts led by two at half-time through Sam Duffy and Joe Ormrod, but the Wellmen were level by the 52ndminute after quick-fire goals from Danny Andrews and Jake Cooke.

Danny Warren’s close range header in the 61st minute was eventually the winning moment, while there were red cards for Mold midfielder Ryan Coney and Holywell pair Danny Sullivan and Luke Wiltshire in amongst the chaos.

Prestatyn Town were 4-1 winners away at Gresford Athletic, with all five goals coming in the first half. Tom Hilditch, Dixie Davies, Dan Atkins and Karl Clair all got on the scoresheet for the Seasiders, while Colliers midfielder Charley Edge was sent off in the second half.

Llandudno are yet to pick up a point in the JD Cymru North this season, but they progressed to round two with a 1-0 win over Chirk AAA on Friday night. 17-year-old Harvey Bennett scored the only goal of the game in just the fifth minute.

Porthmadog were Northern finalists in this competition last season, but they were beaten 3-1 on home turf by Ruthin Town. Phil Hudson’s side were 3-0 up inside 33 minutes as Owain Morris scored twice – either side of Soulayman El Amri’s goal – before Danny Brookwell netted a 75th minute consolation for Port.

There was a third successive defeat for Bangor 1876 as Guilsfield triumphed 2-1 at Nantporth. Jamie Hyne and Adam Knott scored either side of half before Liam Morris’ late consolation.

There was a nine-goal thriller at Rhiw Dda’r as Ammanford progressed with a 5-4 win over Taffs Well. Gruff Harrison’s side led 4-1 at half-time and 5-2 with three minutes to go, with Morgan Clarke scoring a hat-trick, but a pair of late goals from Owain Edwards and Ellis Sage ensured a nervy finish.

Pontardawe Town produced a sensational performance to thrash Abergavenny Town 6-0 at Parc Ynysderw. Captain Joe Lloyd netted a hat-trick, alongside one each for Michael Morris, Tom Davies and substitute Josh Dorward.

Afan Lido left it late to book their place in the second round as Josh Webber’s 91st minute goal earned a 1-0 win over Goytre United. Reds skipper Liam McCreesh was sent off following a melee in the dying moments.

Caerau Ely eased through on their competition debut with a 3-0 home win over Trefelin. Captain Jack Ashford opened the scoring in the first half, before substitute Dan Bowen netted a second half brace to seal victory.

Llanelli Town continued their impressive recent form by winning 4-0 away at Abertillery Bluebirds. Sean Cronin, fresh from his four goals in the JD Cymru South last weekend, opened the scoring from the penalty spot before summer signings Ethan Cann, Sam Johnson and David Lyon all got in on the act.

Cambrian & Clydach survived a late scare to earn a 3-2 home win over Llantwit Major. The Cam Army led 3-0 through Cameron Keetch, ex-Major forward Danny Woolfenden and Liam Reed, but a Joel Woodington double in the final 10 minutes set up a nervy finish. David Vincent and Callum Pearce were both sent off in the closing stages.

JD Cymru South leaders Briton Ferry Llansawel progressed with a 1-0 victory away at a spirited Baglan Dragons side. 18-year-old Jasper Payne scored the only goal of the game in just the eighth minute.

Carmarthen Town triumphed 3-1 away at Cwmbran Celtic to achieve back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Lewis Iles cancelled out Jac Walters’ opener before the Carmarthen teenager netted again, while Mason Jones-Thomas made sure of the Old Gold’s progress.
