Match Summary
The phrase a “game of two halves” was made for a match like this as Cymru controlled the first half taking a 2-0 lead into the break before Iceland dominated the second half to come from behind and draw 2-2.
There was a lot of positives to take from the match but also an equal amount that the Cymru squad and management can learn from too.
Cymru played exciting football in the first half with Brennan Johnson making it seven goals in seven games for club and country as he brought his form at Tottenham Hotspur into this international match before Harry Wilson added a deserved second.
It could’ve been more too as Wilson also had a shot deflected onto the post and Sorba Thomas went one-on-one with Hakon Rafn Valdimarsson.
In the second half, Logi Tómasson came off the bench to strike twice as Iceland dominated and created more than enough chances to go on and win the game to take all three points.
Cymru took the lead in the 11th minute when Wilson stayed onside to run through onto a ball over the top of the defence from Neco Williams. Wilson’s shot saw Valdimarsson get something on the ball to take the sting out of the strike but Johnson followed in to put the ball over the line.
Cymru’s second goal came on the half hour mark with an incredible forward pass from Williams to find Wilson in attack, who applied a sublime finish to establish a deserved two-goal lead.
The response from Iceland in the second half was excellent and when they forced a corner with 20 minutes remaining, the ball eventually landed at the feet of Tómasson, whose strike from outside the box made its way past Danny Ward. It was a lovely finish from the outside of his left foot.
With the way Iceland were playing, an equaliser seemed inevitable and it came just four minutes later as Tómasson did incredibly well to run into the box past Connor Roberts before squeezing the ball through Ward’s legs on the goal line.
Cymru now welcome Montenegro to Cardiff City Stadium on Monday, 14 October with a 7.45pm kick off. Tickets for the match are available by clicking here.

“There’s excitement and a bit of added pressure to repeat it [from the last camp]. All we can do is try and play the exciting football that we can and try and win games.
“We have a plan and we have to stick to that. We try be dominant on the ball and create as many chances as we can. We try to make games exciting and I think we showed that in the first couple of games.”

Bellamy on Cymru expectations
Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy spoke to the media following his arrival in Iceland yesterday evening.
“I’d be worried if there wasn’t expectations,” said Bellamy. “I certainly don’t believe in ever trying to play them down. I don’t think that would be fair to people who come to watch.
“We have a level of patience but also understanding within the group, we have to be sensible as well, but for anyone whether it’s the public or whatever, if they’re excited that’s exactly where we want them to be.
“I certainly wouldn’t play that down. I’ve got to be honest, I’m excited.”

Norrington-Davies reflects on injury setbacks
Rhys Norrington-Davies has made a welcome return to the Cymru squad and sat down with the media on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the injuries that have kept him out of the game for so long.
“The last couple of years have been difficult, they’ve been tough,” he explained. “It’s been dark on occasions. I haven’t played many minutes so it [the call-up] was unexpected, but I’m happy to be here and happy to be back.”
The Sheffield United defender last played for Cymru in September 2022, and having missed the World Cup in Qatar, he is determined to make amends in 2026. “I was extremely disappointed when the initial injury happened because I knew I was out of the World Cup,” he explained.
“I was devastated, so for me it’s a massive motivation to qualify for the next one. It means the world to me to be back here, it’s the best feeling to pull on the Cymru shirt and play in front of the Welsh fans.”

Rodon on Bellamy and Allen
Joe Rodon spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon and covered a range of topics including new head coach Craig Bellamy and the return of midfielder Joe Allen.
“For me it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with him and his team,” said Rodon about Bellamy. “The level and detail of everything is top class and to learn here with him is a pleasure. You could see after the games that all the boys enjoyed it.
“Of course we want to build momentum and keep learning as a group. Team spirit and togetherness is always high and we’re just really excited for the future games.”
Rodon admitted he was surprised to see Allen back in the squad after reversing his decision to retire from international football. “Everyone knows how key Joe has been for Wales over the last however many years,” he said.
“So to have a character and experienced player like that come back into the group is only going to lift the level and benefit us all. Having Joe back has kind of brought back that depth and that strength in the squad.”

Bellamy on intensity
Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy put his squad through their paces in the rain earlier today and recently spoke about the fitness of his players and their playing time at their respective clubs.
“The Championship is the sixth highest intense league in the world, it goes above international football,” he explained. “So the exposure to our football over on these shores prepares you really well for international football.
“The Championship, as we’ve all known, I’ve been in it numerous years, the intensity and the games come thick and fast. Of course, you want them [our Premier League players] all playing as well, but if they don’t, the work the clubs do for their players who aren’t playing is really high level, so they come to you in a really good condition as well.”

Norrington-Davies back from injury
Rhys Norrington-Davies makes a welcome return to the Cymru squad this week having suffered with long-term injuries since his last international appearance back in September 2022.
“He’s had a difficult period with injuries,” said Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy. “He’s a player I really admire from afar as well. He’s just been fortunate, but I’m really looking forward to being able to see him and to be able to work with him.”
The 25-year old made his Cymru debut in the 1-0 win away to Bulgaria in the UEFA Nations League in October 2020 when he was named in the starting line-up, while his only Cymru goal was scored in the 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in June 2022.
Norrington-Davies will now be looking to add to his 13 senior international caps against Iceland and Montenegro. “For certain games I like the intensity he’s able to bring,” Bellamy added. “He’s athletic and a really good profile.”

Bellamy praise for ‘exceptional’ squad
Craig Bellamy reflected on his first international camp as Cymru head coach last week and praised his players for the way they took on information to implement a very different style of play.
“The players were exceptional,” said Bellamy. “I’m always conscious of the amount of information we give to players as you don’t want to overload them too much, but when you speak to the players in general, they needed more, and that really gave us confidence.”
Cymru were held to a 0-0 draw with Türkiye in Cardiff before claiming a 2-1 win in Montenegro. “I was prepared for all scenarios,” Bellamy added. “I was prepared for us not to be able to quite get there. That was probably the most pleasing aspect of it all, how they were able to take on information, but also how they were able to carry that out into the games.”
-
Look who’s back
Joe Allen arrived on camp for Cymru duty on Sunday for the first time since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The midfielder announced his international retirement following the tournament but has answered the call of new head coach Craig Bellamy and will be available for the UEFA Nations League double-header against Iceland and Montenegro.
The 34-year old has 74 senior international appearances to his name and Bellamy believes he still has plenty to offer the squad through his experience and ability.

As it stands
Cymru and Türkiye are joint top of UEFA Nations League Group B4 with four points each heading into this latest round of international fixtures.
Following the 0-0 draw between the two teams in Cardiff last month, Türkiye claimed a 3-1 victory over Iceland while Craig Bellamy’s Cymru side defeated Montenegro 2-1 away through early goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson.
On Friday evening, Cymru take on Iceland in Reykjavik while Türkiye host Montenegro. Türkiye will then head to Iceland next Monday while Montenegro are the visitors to the Cardiff City Stadium.

Previous meetings
Cymru have the statistical advantage over Iceland heading into the UEFA Nations League B4 match on Friday having won five and the previous seven meetings between the two teams.
The first match took place over 40-years ago in June 1980 when goals from David Giles, Brian Flynn and a brace from Ian Walsh earned Mike England’s side a comfortable 4-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying win in Reykjavík. However, Cymru were held to a 2-2 draw in the return match in Swansea in October 1981.
Iceland’s only victory over Cymru took place in September 1984 as Magnus Bergs scored the only goal of the game for the home side, but Cymru have won the last four meetings, the most-recent in March 2014 in a friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The match is best remembered for Gareth Bale (below) scoring a superb individual goal to complete the 3-1 victory. The former Cymru star picked-up the ball in his own half, cruised past his opposite number on the touchline – taking himself off the field of play in the process – before cutting inside to finish into the far corner.
