      Live ReportMatch Summary

      1. MATCH SUMMARY:

Romania claimed a 2-1 victory over Cymru in Bucharest in the first meeting between the two nations since 1993, but the scoreline only told part of the story as both teams created a host of chances.

Craig Bellamy made five changes to his starting line-up following the 1-1 draw with Ghana in Cardiff on Tuesday as Danny Ward, Kai Andrews, Nathan Broadhead, Brennan Johnson and Rhys Norrington-Davies all came into the starting XI, while Ethan Ampadu continued as captain.

Bellamy had highlighted before the game the fact that Cymru had not won an away friendly since 2008, when he actually scored the only goal of the game against Denmark in Copenhagen. For Romania, this was a first home match for the legendary Gheorghe Hagi who returned for a second spell as head coach in April.

Cymru started the match on the front foot and used their pace in attack to ask questions of the home defence with Dan James and Neco Williams enjoying plenty of the ball on both sides of the pitch. Ampadu, Johnson and Kieffer Moore all had early chances, but Romania soon settled into the match and began to dictate matters.

Vlad Dragomir gave the home crowd a lift with a deflected effort that went narrowly wide, and further chances followed for Tudor Băluță and Dragomir again as they forced a series of corners. On 26 minutes Romania thought they had taken the lead through the impressive Louis Munteanu, but his fine finish was ruled out for offside.

Munteanu then forced Ward into making a decent save before Cymru composed themselves with Moore coming close to opening the scoring with a header that narrowly missed the target. However, it was Romania who almost took the lead before half-time as captain Nicolae Stanciu struck his free-kick just wide of Ward’s post.

Romania took the lead on 52 minutes when a smart finish from substitute Florinel Coman completed an excellent team move, but Cymru responded through David Brooks on 64 minutes just after his introduction from the bench as he volleyed a cross from James past Hindrich.

Lewis Koumas scored his first senior goal for Cymru against Ghana on Tuesday, and he looked lively as he came off the bench, forcing a save from Hindrich from a tight angle on 75 minutes. However, Romania remained dangerous on the counter-attack and Ward had to be at his best to deny Denis Drăguş.

Romania scored the decisive goal with ten minutes remaining as a short corner was delivered into the Cymru area and Adrian Rus was able to head past Ward. David Matei then hit the post before Ward pulled off an impressive double save from Drăguş and Rus.

Cymru continued to push for an equaliser, and it was Koumas who once again tested Hindrich before the final whistle. A frustrating night for Bellamy’s side who created a number of chances, but equally, Romania could have increased their lead before this memorable contest came to a close.

      2. FULL-TIME VERDICT:

The 18-year wait for an away friendly victory goes on for Cymru as Romania claim a 2-1 win in Bucharest. The scoreline could and probably should have been a lot more as both sides really went for it from the first whistle, resulting in an entertaining match that could have gone either way. Florinel Coman came off the bench to open the scoring for the home side on 52 minutes, but David Brooks responded for Cymru midway through the 2nd half. The chances kept coming for both teams, but it was Romania who registered the decisive goal with ten minutes remaining as Adrian Rus headed past Danny Ward to seal the win.

      40. Romania get things back underway in Bucharest. Surely this one isn’t going to stay 0-0 for long?

      41. HALF-TIME VERDICT:

A frantic half of football in Bucharest with both teams working tirelessly to press their opponents and attack with pace in possession. Ethan Ampadu, Brennan Johnson and Kieffer Moore all had chances in the opening exchanges as Cymru forced a series of corners, but Romania worked their way into the match and enjoyed a significant period that saw them create a number of chances for themselves. Striker Louis Munteanu has been a real handful for the Cymru defence and had a goal disallowed for offside midway through the half, while captain Nicolae Stanciu struck his free-kick narrowly wide of Danny Ward’s post in the final moments.

      42. A big chance for Romania as Stanciu tries his luck from a free-kick but the captain can only direct his effort narrowly wide.

      43. Another chance for Moore but he cannot direct his header on target. There have been plenty for opportunities for both teams to take the lead.

      44. Louis Munteanu (19) has caused problems for the Cymru defence

      45. A good run from James on the left as Cymru look to get into the match and forces a corner.

      46. Băluță tries his luck from range but fails to trouble Ward as his effort goes wide.

      47. Romania have really got themselves into this match now and are looking the stronger of the two teams as we approach half-time. Munteanu is the man that Cymru need to watch.

      48. Nathan Broadhead gets some close attention from the Romanian defence

      49. Munteanu gets another shot on goal but this time he is denied by Ward. Cymru need to get back in control of this game.

      50. Romania almost take the lead through a fine finish from Munteanu but the striker is flagged offside.

      51. A decent spell of pressure for Romania with Dragomir and Băluță both having chances on goal. The home side have also forced a series of corners in this period of possession.

      52. Brennan Johnson carries the ball forward

      53. Hindrich again called into action to make a comfortable save from Moore. Cymru will want to make these chances count.

      54. A great chance for Cymru but Johnson is denied by goalkeeper Hindrich from close range.

      55. Cymru have certainly started the better of the two teams with their attacking pace causing problems for the Romania defence.

      56. The Cymru starting line-up

      57. A good chance for Amapdu but the captain heads over from a corner. A positive start for the visitors.

      58. A fast-paced start to the match with both teams looking to take control of the game. This high-tempo approach will suit Cymru.

      70. FRIENDLY RECORD AND THE AARON RAMSEY CONNECTION

Craig Bellamy highlighted in his pre-match press conference the fact that the last time Cymru won an away friendly international was in November 2008 as they prepare to take on Romania in Bucharest this evening.

It was actually Bellamy himself who scored the only goal of the game the last time that Cymru claimed a friendly win away from home. Wearing the captains armband, Bellamy scored on 77 minutes to earn his side a 1-0 win over Denmark in Copenhagen.

Aaron Ramsey was just 17 at the time and made his senior Cymru debut in that match as manager John Toshack handed him a starting place in midfield. To put that into context, Ramsey (below) recently announced his retirement from the professional game at the age of 35, having made 86 senior appearances for his country.

      71. AMPADU ON NATIONS LEAGUE PREPARATION

Ethan Ampadu also spoke to the media in Bucharest earlier today and explained how the fixtures against Ghana and Romania will help Cymru prepare for the next UEFA Nations League campaign.

“That’s what our focus has been in this June camp,” said Ampadu. “To raise our levels, to put in better performances, to learn from mistakes that we’ve learned from in the past and to put them right.”

Cymru return to competitive action in September with fixtures against Portugal, Denmark and Norway in League A.

“For what’s to come to make sure we prepare to keep building momentum for that,” Ampadu added.

      72. BELLAMY LOOKS TO IMPROVE FRIENDLY RECORD

Cymru head coach Craig Bellamy spoke to the media earlier today ahead of Saturday’s match against Romania and expressed his concern over the friendly record of his side.

“Our friendlies are not great when you look at the records,” he said. “I think the last time we won away was 2008. It’s like, ‘come on’. If we want to create expectations, to put demands on ourselves and the public as well, we have to have a better record than what we have.”

      73. The Cymru squad trained at the Stadionul Steaua on Friday ahead of the international challenge match against Romania.

      74. SQUAD UPDATE

Defender Dylan Lawlor has not travelled to Bucharest with the Cymru squad having picked up a slight knock in the 1-1 draw with Ghana on Tuesday night.

      75. MEET THE REF

Rohit Saggi of Norway will take charge of the match between Romania and Cymru in Bucharest on Saturday.

The 34-year-old has officiated in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League this season as well as the 3-0 win for France over Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifying.

Saggi will be a familiar face to Cymru fans as he took charge of current head coach Craig Bellamy’s first match as the side played out a 0-0 draw with Türkiye back in September 2024 (below).

He will be assisted by Anders Olav Dale and Jørgen Rønning Valstadsve, also of Norway, while Szabolcs Kovacs of Romania will be the Fourth Official.

      76. PREVIOUS MEETINGS

There have been just five previous meetings between Cymru and Romania as the two nations prepare to face each other at the Stadionul Steaua in Bucharest on Saturday (KO 18:45 UK).

Cymru and Romania were drawn together in qualifying for EURO 1972 and a 0-0 draw in Cardiff in November 1970 was followed by a 2-0 defeat for Dave Bowen’s side in Bucharest. Romania would eventually win the group to reach the quarter-finals but were defeated by Hungary.

The only Cymru victory against Romania was in 1983 as goals from Mickey Thomas, Robbie James, Alan Curtis and a double from Ian Rush earned Mike England’s side an impressive 5-0 win at the Cae Ras in Wrexham.

However, the most famous fixtures between Cymru and Romania took place in qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Romania claimed a 5-1 win in Bucharest in May 1992, and then sealed their place at the finals with a 2-1 in Cardiff in November 1993.

It was a winner-takes-all match in Cardiff as current Romania head coach Gheorghe Hagi put the visitors ahead in the opening half. However, Dean Saunders equalised on the hour, but Paul Bodin missed a penalty for Terry Yorath’s side minutes later. Florin Răducioiu then completed the scoring on 83 minutes.

      77. HAGI MARKS ROMANIA RETURN WITH GEORGIA DRAW

Romanian football legend Gheorghe Hagi marked his return as national team head coach with a 1-1 draw against Georgia in Tbilisi on Tuesday evening.

Appointed in April for a second spell in charge of his country, Hagi will now make an emotional return to Bucharest on Saturday for his first home match. Meanwhile, Craig Bellamy’s Cymru will be look to build on their 1-1 draw against Ghana and continue their preparations for the UEFA Nations League campaign

Louis Munteanu equalised for Romania on 55 minutes to earn them a draw, while in Cardiff Lewis Koumas came off the bench for Cymru score his first senior international goal deep into added-time.

Hagi was part of the Romania side that defeated Cymru in the decisive qualifier for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, a campaign and tournament that Bellamy reflected on as that great Romanian side reached the quarter-final stage.

“It was an incredible period for them and they justified it by impact they had in the World Cup as well,” he explained at the recent squad announcement.

“We can talk about a game at Cardiff Arms Park and how unlucky we were, but I remember the game in Romania as well and that’s when Hagi first hit me as a profile of a player.

“He was incredible and obviously a special player who definitely had a big impact on me growing up for what we had to go through. It will be nice to come up against him, but also nice to see what he thinks of us as well.”
