The North East Wales Football Association

The North East Wales Football Association (NEWFA) plays a central role in the administration and development of football across the region. Working closely with the Football Association of Wales, the association supports clubs, leagues, players, coaches, referees and volunteers through competition management, disciplinary processes, safeguarding, coach and referee development, and wider grassroots initiatives.

Established in 1968, NEWFA is the youngest of the six area associations affiliated to the Football Association of Wales. Its formation came in response to the rapid growth of football across Wrexham, Flintshire and the surrounding areas during the 1960s.

Prior to the association’s creation, football in north-east Wales was administered directly by the FAW from its headquarters in Wrexham. However, the expansion of local leagues, schools’ football and referee development created a need for a dedicated regional body to oversee the game and support its continued growth.

Throughout the 1970s and beyond, NEWFA experienced significant expansion as participation levels increased and new competitions emerged. The association’s cup competitions quickly became a key part of the local football calendar, attracting clubs from communities across the region.

For more than half a century, NEWFA has played a vital role in shaping football in north-east Wales, helping thousands of players, officials and volunteers contribute to the rich footballing heritage of the area while creating opportunities for future generations to enjoy and develop within the game.
