Southall unveils multi-sport facility at Llechryd in landmark opening

Llechryd’s vibrant sports community marked a major milestone as the latest grassroots club to benefit from the Cymru Football Foundation’s Fit-For-Future Facilities Programme through a six-figure grant allowing the creation of a new full-size grass pitch in the village.

This milestone reflects over £207,000 of investment into grassroots sport at Llechryd, combining CFF funding, England and Wales Cricket Board support, and local fundraising, sponsorship, and volunteer contributions. The upgraded cricket outfield with enhanced drainage and the new grass football pitch represents a major leap forward in quality and access.

The CFF – backed by the Department of Media, Culture and Sport’s Multi-Sport Grassroots Facility Programme – has invested just over £120,000 into creating the new pitch that will serve the club’s senior men’s, women’s and junior teams.

The new space will also be utilised by the Club’s wider multi-sport provisions, with collaboration from Cricket Wales on this project allowing additional sports to thrive in a huge boost for the local area.

The development aligns with Llechryd’s wider ambitions to serve as a sustainable, inclusive hub for rural sport. The club now hosts over 300 playing members and 150 social members, and has seen significant post-COVID growth across cricket, particularly among juniors, women, and girls.

This latest development feeds into the £1.1m invested into Pembrokeshire by the Cymru Football Foundation since 2022.

Director at the Cymru Football Foundation, Aled Lewis said:

“The Cymru Football Foundation is committed to investing in facilities that inspire communities. This new space in Llechryd will enable more players to play, improve the experiences of current players and act as a hub for sport in the local community.

“A huge thank you to our partners, UK Government and Cricket Wales in supporting the development of such a high-quality facility. Through the power of collaboration, we’re making huge strides in improving football facilities in Wales on and off the pitch.”

Facilities Investment Manager at Cricket Wales, Victoria Jones said:

“The improvements at Llechryd have been instrumental in supporting the growth of both cricket and football clubs in the community. We’ve also seen a real boost in the participation of women and girls, which is a key focus for us.

Importantly, Llechryd Cricket Club has been recognised as a Disability Champion Club, one of only five in Wales, offering tailored cricket provision for people with disabilities. This is a fantastic development for rural communities, ensuring local sport is accessible to all.”

The CFF supports the development of football through investment and guidance as it delivers the Football Association of Wales’ commitment to develop inspirational fit-for-future football facilities that will improve and grow Welsh football both on and off the pitch.

Since February 2022, the CFF has invested over £18 million into supporting fit-for-future facilities across the country.
