Former Cymru Captain Kevin Ratcliffe opens revitalised facility in Abermule

The Cymru Football Foundation has opened our latest Fit-For-Future Facilities-funded project at Abermule Community Centre thanks to support from UK Government.

Opened by Cymru legend Kevin Ratcliffe, the CFF – backed by UK Government – has invested almost £100,000 into the creation of a brand-new multi-sport facility, alongside additional support from Sport Wales and the community centre’s fundraising efforts.

Previously a set of disused tennis courts, the facility was deemed unsafe and unusable meaning less opportunities for the locals to take part in physical activity.

The new multi-sport facility will act as a hub for members of the community centre, providing a space for tennis and netball as well as football sessions for the junior section of Abermule Football Club and holiday play schemes, school activities and community playgroups.

Trustee at Abermule Community Centre, Terry Wain said:

“Abermule Community Centre and Abermule Football Club are very proud that this joint project has now been completed. The new multi-sport area provides a first-class, safe facility for football, tennis, netball and other sports.

“The whole community will benefit and already the growth of ladies’ football has been amazing – many thanks to CFF, Sport Wales and to all those who have supported the project.”

Director at the Cymru Football Foundation, Aled Lewis said:

“The Cymru Football Foundation is committed to investing in facilities that inspire communities. This new facility in Abermule will enable more players to play, improve the experiences of current players and enable the club to provide a wide range of activities for their community.

“A huge thank you to our partners, UK Government, and Sport Wales in supporting the development of such a high-quality facility. Thanks to the support of our partners, we’re making huge strides in improving football facilities in Wales on and off the pitch.”

The CFF supports the development of football through investment and guidance as it delivers the Football Association of Wales’ commitment to develop inspirational fit-for-future football facilities that will improve and grow Welsh football both on and off the pitch.

Since February 2022, the CFF has invested over £17 million into supporting fit-for-future facilities across the country.
