In 2021, Ysgol Y Grango’s facility was forced to close following concerns around player safety – meaning over 1,500 adult and junior players had to train and play elsewhere.
With a large focus on improving opportunities for women and girls, the CFF worked closely with Wrexham Council and Sport Wales to re-surface and re-opened the pitch in 2023.
Since then, there’s been a huge influx of women and girls with over 130 girls now using the pitch throughout the week – whilst local clubs including CPD Rhos Aelwyd and Penycae have also returned to use the facility.
Jonathan Miller, Health and Wellbeing Lead at Wrexham Council said:
“The installation of the 3G football pitch at Ysgol y Grango has had a transformative impact on both the school and the surrounding community. During school hours, pupils benefit from regular access to high-quality facilities that support physical education and active lifestyles.
“By evening, the pitch becomes a hub for community groups and five local clubs, who use the space to run sessions and host matches. These clubs also form a steering group that meets regularly to coordinate usage and collaborate on growing the game locally.
“This shared planning fosters unity and strategic development, with a strong focus on inclusion—especially for girls. With better visibility, tailored sessions, and a sense of belonging, more girls are stepping onto the pitch than ever before, helping to shape a new generation of confident, enthusiastic players.“
Since 2022, the CFF has built or refurbished over 40 artificial pitches across Cymru with £6.5million invested into pitches with dedicated and protected access for women and girls.
