Porthmadog receives latest six-figure CFF investment

The Cymru Football Foundation opens the 21st small-sided 3G since 2022 at Bwy’n Iach Glaslyn in Porthmadog.

Thanks to support from U.K Government and the Football Association of Wales, northwest Cymru has a new facility for the community to enjoy.

Previously a rundown five-a-side pitch, a six-figure investment from the CFF has brought the facility to life, extending the pitch to cater for 7v7 junior football alongside the existing recreational activity from local residents and the nearby primary and secondary schools.

This will be coupled by usage from the 17 local grassroots teams – with the facility now ready to welcome back over 200 junior and senior players from surrounding communities.

It’s the third facility created or refurbished by the CFF in collaboration with Bwy’n Iach and Cyngor Gwynedd, with successful investments already having a positive impact in Caernarfon and Dolgellau

This latest project takes the total invested into facilities across Gwynedd by the Cymru Football Foundation to over £2.3million.

Director at the Cymru Football Foundation, Aled Lewis said:

“The Cymru Football Foundation is committed to investing in facilities that inspire communities. This new small-sided facility will be essential for the growth of the football club and ease access to grassroots facilities in Porthmadog and the surrounding areas.

“A huge thank you to our partners UK Government, Byw’n Iach and Cyngor Gwynedd in supporting the development of this new facility. Through the power of collaboration, we’re making huge strides in improving football facilities in Wales on and off the pitch.”

Leader of Cyngor Gwynedd and local member for the Porthmadog ward, Councillor Nia Jefferys said:

“Porthmadog has a strong football tradition – this new pitch is very good news for the town and I’m grateful to everyone who has been involved for their hard work, a big thank you in particular to the staff and pupils at Ysgol Eifion Wyn. I know that there are lots of boys’ and girls’ teams here in Port and I hope that this new pitch will mean young people will continue to enjoy playing the game well into the future.”

The CFF supports the development of football through investment and guidance as it delivers the Football Association of Wales’ commitment to develop inspirational fit-for-future football facilities that will improve and grow Welsh football both on and off the pitch.

Since February 2022, the CFF has invested £20million into supporting fit-for-future facilities across the country.
