£20million Spotlight: Welshpool Town

After losing their previous junior pitches to a school build in 2018, Welshpool Town were left with half of their previous pitch access and struggling to cope with the demand of playing and training opportunities for their senior and junior teams – which led to two of their teams having to fold.

Named after a local footballing legend Wayne Evans, the installation of these new pitches has allowed the club to add to their pool of over 270 junior and senior players – including over 50 female participants, apply for other FAW schemes to encourage participation in the area and restore the teams they’d previously lost.

Since the new pitches were unveiled last year, Welshpool have seen their junior section thrive and will now have representation from U6 to U16 boys and girls teams for the 2024/25 season.

The new pitches will also host the FAW’s McDonald’s Fun Football Programme alongside other initiatives.

Chris Roberts, Chair of Welshpool Town Juniors said:

“Without this generous grant from the Cymru Football Foundation and UK Government, the installation of these new pitches would not have been possible. We’re so pleased that our junior and senior teams have somewhere to train, play and help us grow as a football club.

“The new pitches have greatly enhanced the training and playing facilities for the club and it’s a joy to see all the club’s players enjoying training and playing – we’re grateful to all of the funders for their contribution to this facility.”

Since 2022, the CFF has created and upgraded 19 grass pitch sites across Cymru with over 100 clubs receiving grants through our Equipment Fund to purchase new pitch maintenance equipment and supported over 200 pitches through the Pitch Advisory Service Wales.
