Coming Out in Football – Online Panel
Today (Monday the 11th of October 2021) marks ‘National Coming Out Day’, an annual LGBTQ+ awareness day observed to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people in ‘coming out’.
In support of this day the FAW will be hosting an online panel discussion in partnership with Football v Homophobia Cymru on coming out in football.
The panel hosted by FAW Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Integrity Manager Jason Webber will discuss the real-life experiences of LGBTQ+ footballers from all levels of the game with several inspiring guests which will include:
- Lou Englefield – Director of Pride Sports UK & Campaign Director of Football V Homophobia.
- Carys Ingram – Co-Chair for the @ProudSwans & the @TheRainbowWall.
- Harri Messenger – Football Player at Cardiff Dragons Wales’ first and only LLGBTQI+ Club.
- Natalie Washington – Trans Football Player & Campaign Lead for the Football v Transphobia campaign.
Discussions will also look at; what can be learned from both the positive and negative experiences of those who have shared their authentic selves, how can we be better allies to LGBTQ+ footballers and how to create an environment in which footballers feel they can bring their whole selves to the game.
