This was an entertaining encounter as two teams who have been enjoying a fantastic season in their respective Ardal Leagues divisions came head-to-head in the Dragon Signs Amateur Trophy Final.

Newport City were quick to find their way to the back of the net when Calum Bateman scored after just 5 minutes.

The Ardal South East club looked in full control but when Penrhyncoch settled themselves, they too looked dangerous on the attack.

The Roosters equaliser came from an unlikely source as defender Harri Horwood scored with a stunning strike from around 25-yards to bend the ball into the net off the right post.

The pendulum swung in the second half towards Penrhynchoch after Rhys Jenkins gave his team the lead with a looping header over Newport goalkeeper Cohen Riella to make it 2-1.

Penrhyncoch pulled themselves further ahead when Riella failed to claim the ball in the box and with his back to goal, Dion Phillips hit the ball over his own head and into the net after Newport defender Frederick Stevens attempted to clear off the line.

In this pulsating final, Newport struck back immediately through Cole Jarvis before Richard Noyes then levelled the tie 3-3 against Penrhyncoch.

There was more drama to come late in the game as Newport completed their remarkable comeback from a Noyes long throw into the box where Joseph Ogugua poked the ball over the line to make it 4-3.

Newport then took a 5-3 lead as Ogugua scored again but not even this put Penrhyncoch’s heads down as the Roosters continued to press for a goal in added time and they got one to make it a nervy few minutes as Tomos Evans scored for 5-4.

Newport were able to hang on to their lead this time and lifted the Dragons Signs Amateur Trophy for the first time in their history.
