A powerful new short documentary tells the inspiring story of Marie’s battle with breast cancer and her remarkable return to football on the international stage. Released to coincide with International Women’s Day, the film highlights the transformative power of football and the life-changing work taking place across Welsh communities.
Marie: A Warrior’s Journey, is set to inspire audiences across Wales and beyond, telling the extraordinary story of one woman’s battle with breast cancer and her return to football on the international stage. The documentary is available to watch below.
The film was conceived by Charlotte Barrell, who collaborated with EatSleep Media as part of the FAW BE. Football Mentoring Programme last year. Charlotte works for Street Football Wales, an Affiliate Partner of the Football Association of Wales. The charity supports socially isolated individuals across Wales and helps transform lives through the power of football.
From diagnosis to the world stage
In August 2025, Marie was selected as part of an eight-woman squad representing Wales at the prestigious Homeless World Cup in Oslo. The team made history by achieving Wales’ highest-ever finish in the tournament, placing seventh in the world.
Marie’s journey to the international stage, however, was far from straightforward.
Her life was put on hold following a breast cancer diagnosis, which was a battle that tested her physically and emotionally and led to her losing connection with the sport she loved.
Through Street Football Wales, Marie rediscovered her passion for football, rebuilt her confidence and ultimately earned the honour of wearing the Welsh dragon on her chest.
A story of resilience and belonging
Deeply moved by Marie’s resilience, Charlotte was inspired to create Marie: A Warrior’s Journey, a short documentary exploring the realities of living through cancer, the loss of identity and purpose that can follow, and the power of sport to help rebuild both.
The film highlights how street football helped reconnect Marie with Welsh football and how her story can inspire others facing adversity to step forward and get involved.
Charlotte’s connection to the cause is deeply personal. Having represented Wales herself at the Homeless World Cup in 2023, she credits Street Football Wales with changing and saving her life.
“This charity gave me purpose when I needed it most,” Charlotte explains. “Seeing what it did for Marie, and what it continues to do for so many others, is why this story needed to be told.”

Supporting Team Wales
Street Football Wales is now preparing to select eight more women and men to represent Wales at this year’s Homeless World Cup in Mexico City.
To make the opportunity possible, the charity must raise £50,000 to fund travel, training and support for the squad.
For players like Marie, the tournament represents far more than football, it offers belief, belonging and a second chance.
Street Football Wales is now calling on communities, businesses and supporters across the country to help send Team Wales to the Homeless World Cup and give others the same transformative opportunity. Click here to help.
