FAW wins Best Sustainability Initiative at Welsh Sports Association Industry Awards 2026

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has been recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability after winning the Best Sustainability Initiative award at the Welsh Sports Association Sports Industry Awards 2026.

The award celebrates the FAW Biodiversity, Nature & Wellbeing project, an initiative that demonstrates how football can be a powerful platform for protecting and enhancing the natural environment while delivering meaningful benefits for communities, staff and future generations.

The project has transformed FAW facilities into thriving biodiversity spaces through the installation of wildlife habitats, wildflower areas, pollinator initiatives, vegetable gardens and nature-focused wellbeing spaces. Designed to support local ecosystems while creating positive social impact, the initiative has become a key part of the FAW’s wider sustainability strategy.

A major element of the project has been community engagement and education. Working in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, local primary schools and Eco School Councils have participated in habitat creation and biodiversity workshops, giving young people hands-on experience of environmental conservation and helping inspire the next generation of environmental champions.

The project has also included the installation of a beehive at FAW headquarters in Hensol in partnership with Bee1. Home to approximately 20,000 honeybees, the initiative supports local pollination and biodiversity while creating opportunities for staff engagement and wellbeing.

Jason Webber, Senior EDI & Sustainability Manager at the FAW, said: “Winning this award is a fantastic achievement and recognition of the collective effort that has gone into making this project a success.

“Our Biodiversity, Nature & Wellbeing project was built on the belief that football has the power to create positive change beyond the game itself. By enhancing biodiversity, engaging local communities and creating opportunities for young people to connect with nature, we are helping to create a lasting legacy for both football and the environment.

“I would like to thank Keep Wales Tidy, Bee1, the schools involved in the project and FAW colleagues across the organisation and our National Team players for their commitment, enthusiasm and support. This award belongs to everyone who has contributed to the journey.”

The FAW would also like to thank the Welsh Sports Association and the judging panel for recognising the project, as well as congratulate the other shortlisted organisations in the category.

While the award marks an important milestone, the FAW remains committed to building on this success and continuing to deliver initiatives that protect nature, support wellbeing and contribute to a more sustainable future for Welsh football and the communities it serves.
