The Cymru men’s team have been nominated for a St David Award in the Sport category after reaching their first FIFA World Cup tournament in 64 years.
Guided by Rob Page and captained by Gareth Bale, Cymru reached the finals by beating Austria and Ukraine in two play-off matches at the Cardiff City Stadium. Out in Qatar, Cymru faced the USA, Iran and England in Group B, putting Wales on the world stage.
Reaching the World Cup finals for the first time in 64 years allowed the football team and its fans the opportunity to showcase Wales’ identity, language and culture to many millions of people around the world. The Welsh bucket hat became a well-known sight in Doha, including giant versions appearing in Doha and other places around Wales.
The St David Award is a prestigious national award with nominations coming from the general public for various categories. Last year’s winner in the Sport category was Olympic sailor Hannah Mills, with David Smith and Lauren Price also nominated. The men’s team won the Award in 2017 after reaching the UEFA EURO 2016 semi-finals, and Jess Fishlock was nominated for the Award in 2019. The winners of this year’s Award will be announced on Thursday 20th April.
Qualification for the UEFA EURO 2024 championship is set to get underway later this month, with Cymru facing Croatia in Split (Saturday 25 March) and Latvia at the Cardiff City Stadium (Tuesday 28 March). Tickets for the match against Latvia are available to purchase on the FAW ticketing website, with prices starting from £5 for juniors (16 and under).
