The Football Association of Wales is joining Amnesty International in support of their Football Welcomes Campaign across the month of April.
Throughout April every year football Clubs across Wales come together to celebrate refugees’ contribution to football and how football can be utilised as a tool to create more welcoming communities.
This year, Amnesty International have created an action pack full of tips, tricks and resources to support football Clubs across Wales’ domestic leagues and grassroots game to celebrate the month of action.

In previous years the FAW has worked with Clubs across Wales to become Refugee Welcoming Clubs. With training provided by Amnesty International, there are now Clubs across the country who can offer safe and inclusive spaces for Refugees to play the game. The FAW have ensured that a number of the selected Clubs across Wales are situated within the 4 dispersal areas to support Asylum Seekers and also are spread throughout Wales to support Resettled Refugees. You can learn more about this initiative here: Football Welcomes Refugees (Cymru)
In addition to the accreditation for Clubs, the FAW also offers Coaching and Refereeing courses free of charge through bursary places. The Bursary Programme provides free Level 1 Football Coaching and Referee Award Courses for Asylum Seekers & Refugees identified through the FAW’s Project Partners. The FAW provide additional support and mentoring for individuals who require it and signpost those qualified individuals to a “Refugee Welcoming” Accredited Club.
This year the FAW are also proud to announce its first ever Football Welcomes Refugee Conference, taking place at the Cardiff City Stadium April 9. The Football Welcomes Refugees Cymru Conference is an unique opportunity to explore how football can play a pivotal role in welcoming, integrating, and empowering refugees and asylum seekers across Wales.
Building on the success of the Football Welcomes Refugees Cymru Programme, this inspiring event brings together refugees along with key partners from across the game in Wales to network, learn, and share ideas to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone feels they belong.
