Cymru Over-70s lift World Cup

Cymru Over-70s have lifted the Veterans World Cup with a 2-0 win over the USA in the final at Komazawa Olympic Park in Japan.

The tournament was held between 1-3 October and they played six matches in total to lift the trophy for the second year running. On their way to the final Cymru also overcome Germany and Australia.

Twelve teams participated in the Over-70s World Cup and the Cymru team who are jointly managed by Jon Ross and Jason Kennedy, didn’t concede a single goal on their way to lifting the trophy.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, goalkeeper Alan Meacham said: “It’s been really demanding, but the boys have really pulled together. We’ve got a great team spirit amongst the squad, we enjoy each other’s company and it’s been an absolute fantastic experience for us at our age.

Speaking about the final, Meacham added: “We had our backs to the wall for much of the game. The USA are a quality side with lots of former MLS professional players.”

The Cymru team will now look ahead to the 2026 edition of the tournament to see if they can keep hold of the trophy and complete a hat trick.
