Gemma Grainger has announced her 22-player Cymru squad to face the current FIFA Women’s World Cup Champions, the USA, in California on Sunday 9 July.
The match will be the first time the Cymru women’s team will play outside of Europe, and the first time they will face the four-time world champions.
Mary McAteer has received her first Cymru call-up after recent involvement with the WU19 side, while captain Sophie Ingle misses out through suspension and Rachel Rowe is unavailable due to injury. Captain Ingle however will travel out with the side as a training player. Cymru’s record cap holder Jess Fishlock, who plays her football in the USA with OL Reign, has also been included.
The fixture will be the USA’s sendoff match ahead of this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and it will be Cymru’s final preparation ahead of the UEFA Women’s Nations League getting underway in September. Grainger’s side are in League A of the inaugural competition and have been drawn alongside Germany, Denmark, and Iceland.
The match will be shown live on BBC Wales.
