FAW Launch ‘Green Goals Charter’

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is proud to announce the launch of its ‘Green Goals Charter’, a key initiative under the FAW’s sustainability strategy and part of its ongoing collaboration with Global Action Plan and participation in the ACCESS Project

This milestone was celebrated during the recent ‘Together Greener’ webinar on 17th February, which brought together clubs and sustainability advocates to share ideas and inspire action.

The ‘Together Greener’ webinar showcased leading examples of environmental sustainability in football. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) presented its Green Club programme in Ireland, highlighting how clubs can take practical steps to reduce their environmental impact. Additionally, Steve Brown from Clarbeston Road AFC shared insights into the sustainability work being done at his club, providing valuable lessons and motivation for others to follow suit. The session concluded with an open Q&A, where participants discussed challenges, along with potential solutions, and shared their own club’s green initiatives.

The FAW Green Goals Charter invites clubs across Wales to make a meaningful commitment to sustainability. By signing the charter, clubs pledge to implement two ‘Green Goals’ and practical actions to improve their environmental impact. The charter also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the connection between climate action and broader societal benefits such as improved health, reduced inequality, and economic growth. This initiative also supports the ambitions set out in the Welsh Government’s Well-being of Future Generations Act, which aims to improve social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being in Wales.

This initiative reflects the FAW’s broader vision for a sustainable future, where football clubs become champions of environmental responsibility in their communities. Clubs are encouraged to assess their operations, embed sustainability into their decision-making, and engage members and supporters in creating positive change. Importantly, the programme prioritises inclusivity, ensuring that sustainability projects are accessible to members of all backgrounds and abilities.

Together, we can harness the power of football to protect our planet, one green goal at a time.
