JD Welsh Cup: Games to watch in Round Two

With JD Cymru Premier clubs entering the JD Welsh Cup in Round Two this weekend, there are plenty of exciting ties to look forward to.

Follow all of the action on the FAW website and Cymru Football app.

Colwyn Bay v Kinmel Bay (Friday, 7:30pm)

Round Two kicks off with a blockbuster fixture on Friday night, as fourth tier Kinmel Bay make the short trip to JD Cymru Premier side Colwyn Bay.

Kinmel Bay were originally drawn at home in the tie, but accepted an offer from Colwyn Bay to reverse the fixture – with Kinmel Bay still keeping all the gate receipts in a commendable display of generosity from their higher-ranked opponents.

Colwyn Bay currently sit fifth in the JD Cymru Premier and are unbeaten in their last three games, keeping clean sheets in all of those matches. The Seagulls are former JD Welsh Cup semi-finalists, reaching the last four in 2021/22.

Kinmel Bay, who are facing top-flight opposition for the first time in their history, have made an impressive start to the campaign – winning nine of their first 10 matches in all competitions. That includes victories over Chirk AAA and third tier sides Llangollen Town and Llanfair United in the JD Welsh Cup to reach Round Two for the second consecutive season.

Bow Street v Flint Town United (Saturday, 12:45pm)

The weekend’s live Sgorio fixture comes from Cae Piod, where third tier Bow Street host top-flight Flint Town United.

Bow Street, who are currently sixth in the Ardal North East, head into the clash in strong form – winning eight of their last nine matches in all competitions.

The Magpies have so far knocked out CPD Cefni, Penycae and Cefn Albion to reach Round Two for the third season in a row. They have not progressed past this stage for 15 years.

1954 cup winners Flint triumphed 4-0 at home over Llanelli Town last weekend, a result which lifted them up to ninth in the JD Cymru Premier table. The last time that the Silkmen failed to win a Round Two tie was in 2016/17.

Port Talbot v Afan Lido (Saturday, 2pm)

A huge derby awaits on Saturday afternoon as fourth tier outfit Port Talbot host Afan Lido of the JD Cymru South.

Separated by less than a mile, the two sides are both former finalists of this competition and have not met in competitive action for three and a half years. Their last JD Welsh Cup meeting ended in a 6-0 victory for Afan Lido in 2021/22.

Port Talbot are yet to lose a match in any competition this term – the Steelmen sit second in the South Wales Premier League Premier Division with five wins from six matches. Meanwhile, they have knocked out AFC Whitchurch, Grange Albion and Seven Sisters Onllwyn to reach Round Two of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time in a decade.

In contrast, Afan Lido are struggling for form and currently sit 13th in the JD Cymru South with only two wins from their opening 10 league games. Garry Taylor’s side came from behind to triumph 3-2 over Evans & Williams in the last round.

Mold Alexandra v The New Saints (Saturday, 2pm)

JD Welsh Cup holders The New Saints begin their defence of the trophy with an away trip to JD Cymru North side Mold Alexandra.

The Saints triumphed 2-1 over Connah’s Quay Nomads in last season’s final to lift the trophy for the 10th time. The Oswestry side, who are currently six points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier and on a nine-match winning streak in all competitions, were last beaten in a Round Two tie in 2007.

Mold Alexandra currently sit eighth in the JD Cymru North after a 3-0 victory away at Rhyl 1879 last weekend. Barry Owen’s side knocked out top-flight opposition in last season’s JD Welsh Cup, winning 2-1 over Briton Ferry Llansawel in Round Three.

This will be the first meeting between the two sides since they faced off in Round Three of the JD Welsh Cup in 2019/20, when TNS were emphatic 9-0 winners as Kurtis Byrne starred with four goals.

Dinas Powys v Cardiff Draconians (Saturday, 2pm)

JD Cymru South side Cardiff Draconians will venture just south of the capital to face fifth tier Dinas Powys on Saturday.

Currently sitting sixth in the South Wales Premier League Championship, Dinas Powys are one of the lowest-ranked sides left in this season’s JD Welsh Cup. Wins over Clydach Wasps, Croesyceiliog and Afan United have seen them reach this stage.

Cardiff Draconians have been in impressive form in the JD Cymru South

Cardiff Draconians have made an impressive start to life in the JD Cymru South following promotion last season – Nana Baah’s side currently sit fourth in the table and are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions. They won 4-2 over Cwmbran Celtic in the last round and are now targeting a spot in Round Three for the first time in their history.

Despite now sitting three tiers apart, the two sides were in the same division – the Ardal South West – as recently as 2022/23 when the Dracs completed the league double over their opponents.
