Martyn Margetson joins Cymru coaching staff

Ahead of his first international window in charge of Cymru, Craig Bellamy has completed his backroom staff setup with the addition of Martyn Margetson as Goalkeeper Coach.

Margetson was previously the Cymru Goalkeeper Coach between 2011-2016 under Gary Speed and Chris Coleman and was part of the UEFA EURO 2016 campaign before joining the England national team. During his time in England working more than one hundred matches, Margetson reached two UEFA EURO finals and a FIFA World Cup semi-final. A former Cymru international as a player, Margetson has also worked at West Ham, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace and Everton prior to his current role as Head of Goalkeeping at Swansea City.

On his appointment, Margetson said “Being Cymru’s goalkeeper coach for the squad that reached the UEFA EURO 2016 semi-finals was one of the best experiences of my career, and I can’t wait to get started with the team again. I’m looking forward to working with the current group of goalkeepers and the wider squad, having worked with several of the players previously, and I hope my experience will be able to help bring success to the team.”

Margetson’s appointment confirms Craig Bellamy’s backroom staff following the additions of Andrew Crofts, James Rowberry, Piet Cremers and Ryland Morgans last week.

On Margetson’s appointment, Bellamy said “When I looked at the group of new coaching staff, there’s a lot of experience of high-level club football but not of international football, which Martyn brings with him. The experience isn’t only of international football, but of reaching the final stages of tournament football. That experience and knowledge will be a huge benefit and getting him involved was a no brainer.”

Tickets for Bellamy’s first match in charge of Cymru against Türkiye at the Cardiff City Stadium (7:45pm Cardiff City Stadium) are available to purchase on the FAW ticketing website.
