Terry Yorath 1950-2026

The Football Association of Wales is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Terry Yorath, a distinguished former Cymru international and National Team Manager.

Yorath made his senior international debut in 1969 against Italy and over the next decade became a pillar of the national side, earning 59 caps, scoring two goals and establishing himself as a tough, intelligent and commanding midfielder. He also wore the armband as Cymru came close to qualifying for the 1978 FIFA World Cup.

At club level, Yorath enjoyed a successful playing career with Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Vancouver Whitecaps, Bradford City and also made one appearance for Swansea City before being appointed the club’s manager.

It was at Leeds United where he made a name for himself, scoring 11 goals in 199 appearances. Leeds was his first professional club having signed for the Yorkshire club at the age of 17.

Following his retirement as a player, Yorath moved into management and in 1988 was appointed manager of the Cymru National Team. His tenure produced some of the most dramatic and emotional campaigns in Welsh football history. Under his guidance, Cymru suffered heartbreak during the qualification campaign for the 1994 FIFA World Cup as the side pushed hard for a place on the global stage before narrowly missing out.

Despite these near misses, Yorath’s time in charge of Cymru helped restore belief, competitiveness and national pride. He introduced and nurtured players, instilling a spirit that would endure long beyond his tenure.

Terry Yorath will be remembered in Wales for his contribution to the game. The thoughts of everyone at the Football Association of Wales are with Terry’s family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time.
