Rhian Wilkinson visits Carmarthen school ahead of EURO qualifiers

With less than two weeks to go before Cymru’s final UEFA EURO qualifier against Kosovo at Parc y Scarlets (6pm Tuesday 16 July), clubs and schools across the country have been submitting their group bookings to attend the match.

The FAW has seen a significant increase in group bookings compared to the previous match in Llanelli in May, with the upcoming fixture falling in the last window of term before the school holidays. Group bookings offer a discounted rate on tickets and are open for schools, clubs and any individual looking to purchase 10 or more tickets.

One of the schools that will be at the match will be Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin from Carmarthen. The school arranged their first trip to a Cymru Women’s team match in October 2022 for the FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia & Herzegovina at the Cardiff City Stadium, and the fixture in Llanelli will be a lot closer to home for the pupils.

Rhian Wilkinson visited the school this week to thank pupils and staff for attending the match, delivering a coaching session for girls involved in the school team. Following the visit, Head Teacher Dr. Llinos Jones said “It was an incredibly special experience for the girls to receive a coaching session and to meet Rhian. She was incredibly inspirational and everyone in the school is looking forward to supporting Cymru in their upcoming match. Diolch yn fawr.”

The FAW is looking to grow on the 4,046 crowd at the match against Ukraine in May, setting the ambitious target of beating the record attendance for a Women’s international game outside of Cardiff (5,982). Rhian Wilkinson believes the Red Wall plays a key part in the teams’ success; “The crowd for my first two matches in charge of Cymru have been special, as players and staff we appreciate everything you do. Visiting schools like Bro Myrddin is so important to thank those that make the effort to support us, and really hits home how much this team means to the country.”

“Whether you have supported us previously or you are coming for the first time, your support means everything to us, and we can’t wait to see everyone at Parc y Scarlets on 16 July.”
