Caernarfon Town win FAW Youth Cup for the first time

Caernarfon Town won the FAW Youth Cup for the first time in their history as they staged a second half comeback to triumph 3-2 over The New Saints at the Go Goodwins Stadium.

The Cofis trailed 2-1 at half-time, but scored twice in the second half to complete a turnaround and avenge their defeat to Haverfordwest County in last year’s final.

Perhaps with that loss 12 months ago in their minds, Caernarfon trailed after just three minutes in Llandudno as Oliver Mirceta-Jones turned home Alfie Webb’s cross to give TNS the lead. However, the Cofis were level on 16 minutes when Osian Ellis fired home a superb free-kick from outside of the box.

The Saints regained the advantage nine minutes before half-time, with Mirceta-Jones again the scorer as his shot from range deflected over Caernarfon goalkeeper Hari Thomas.

Caernarfon were level again just before the hour mark, with Charlie Griffith turning in Iwan Jones’ cross from close range as the Cofis refused to give in to the 2022 and 2023 cup winners.

The winning goal then arrived with 75 minutes on the clock, when Owen Roberts sent a magnificent looping volley into the net from outside the box and spark wild scenes of celebration.

There was a crucial goalline clearance from captain Caron Williams late on as Caernarfon held on to their lead and became the first side from north Wales to win the FAW Youth Cup for 30 years.
