2026 Bute Energy U16s Cup Final: Match Preview

Briton Ferry Llansawel and The New Saints head to Park Avenue in Aberystwyth on Sunday 3 May for the 2026 Bute Energy U16s Cup Final (KO 14:00).

In Begw Gruffydd and Evie Wigley, Briton Ferry Llansawel and The New Saints respectively have two in-form goalscorers as the duo have scored in every round. Last season, Pontypridd United claimed the trophy with a 2-1 win over Cardiff Wanderers who were the holders at the time, and another close contest is expected this weekend.

The campaign began for Briton Ferry Llansawel back in October as the side claimed a 4-0 victory away to Cascade. Sophia Grove and Gruffydd found the back of the net to put the side two goals ahead in the opening half before further goals from substitutes Gracie Holmes-Allen and Eva Young completed the scoring.

The reward was a home draw against the holders Pontypridd United in the next round a month later. An early goal from Bella Williams handed Ferry the advantage before Gruffydd scored twice after the restart, the second coming from the penalty spot. A late goal from Isobel Oliver-Jones for the visitors proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Llandudno were the next test for Briton Ferry Llansawel but a resounding 7-1 victory booked their place in the semi-final. Gruffydd scored another two goals while Eva Young, Maddie Williams, Tia Casburn-Davies, Maizie Steins and Bella Williams also added their names to the scoresheet. Meisi Griffiths had equalised for the visitors, but the challenge proved too much.

The New Saints celebrate during their Semi-Final victory over Barry Town United

Although they were drawn to take on Swansea City in the semi-finals, their opponents withdrew from the competition and forfeited the match. The New Saints were eliminated at the semi-final stage last season by eventual winners Pontypridd United, but this season they have been the dominant side in the competition.

In fact, The New Saints have scored 23 goals in their three ties and are yet to concede a single goal. The Saints began their campaign with a comfortable 8-0 victory away to NFA back in November. Wigley scored four with Erin Barton, Tallulah Parker, Ella Breese and substitute Kacey Rogers Steer also hitting the back of the net.

Rhyl 1879 were the next opponents but a repeat 8-0 scoreline followed with Wigley, Maisy Jones and Lexi Jones scoring two goals each. Parker and Tilly Jones were also on target as the side eased their way into the semi-final once again and a match against Barry Town United at Jenner Park for a place in the final.

Another convincing performance from the Saints followed as Wigley and Barton both scored twice in the opening half to give their side a commanding lead. Lilly Garrett then scored either side of half-time to make it six before Breese scored her second goal of the campaign to complete the 7-0 scoreline.

Park Avenue is the home of JD Cymru South side Aberystwyth Town and recently hosted the Dragon Signs Amateur Trophy Final between Pontardawe Town and Bangor City 1876. There will be no advance ticket sales for the final, with entry to Park Avenue on the day costing £2 for adults. Concessions go free.
