Cymru qualify for back-to-back UEFA EURO U17 finals

Cymru have sealed qualification for the UEFA EURO U17 finals for the second year in a row after finishing second in Group 2 in the Elite Round.

Craig Knight’s side headed into their final game knowing a victory would be enough for them to reach back-to-back finals following their 2-1 win over Romania and 2-1 defeat against Sweden.

Despite a goalless first half in their final fixture against Bulgaria, Cymru went ahead following an own goal from Bozhidar Petrov seven minutes after the restart.

Elliot Myles then doubled Cymru’s lead with 16 minutes left on the clock before Bulgaria gave them a late scare when Mihail Polendakov halved the deficit with a minute left of normal time.

But Knight’s side held out to secure the victory and seal a place at the finals in Cyprus this summer.

The draw for the finals will take place on Wednesday 3 April in Ayia Napa. The 15 qualified teams – alongside hosts Cyprus – will be split into four groups of four for the final tournament, with the top two in each section progressing to the knockout phase.
