Cymru secure first win in Cwpan Gary Speed

Wales' Ralphie Beckwith celebrates as he makes it 2-0 during the Cwpan Gary Speed MU16 fixture between Wales and Gibralter at The Globe Stadium, 26th of August, Buckley, Wales

The second round of fixtures in the Cwpan Gary Speed continued on Thursday across north Wales, delivering more excitement as teams battled for position ahead of the final day.

Northern Ireland kicked off the day’s action with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Japan in Ruthin, maintaining their unbeaten start in the tournament and setting the pace at the top of the table.

Later in the evening, attention turned to Buckley as Cymru took on Gibraltar, with both sides searching for their first win of the competition. The game looked destined to remain goalless going into half-time, until Bobby Lewis broke the deadlock with a late strike – his second goal in as many games – giving Cymru a crucial lead at the break.

Adrian Harvie’s side took full control in the second half, adding two more goals through Ralphie Beckwith and Sonny Peyton to seal a comfortable 3-0 win, along with a clean sheet.

The tournament now heads into a decisive final day on Sunday 31 August, with a winner-takes-all clash between Cymru and Northern Ireland at Colwyn Bay (10:30am). At the same time, Japan will face Gibraltar in Ruthin (10:30am).

Tickets for each fixture will be sold at the venues on match day, £3 adults and £1 children and the matches can be live streamed on the SolidSport platform.
